Pratham

Pratham is India's largest non-governmental organization working to provide quality education to underprivileged children. Formed in 1994, in Mumbai, as a tripartite collaboration between the government, the corporate sector, and citizens, Pratham has taken its mission of 'every child in school and learning well' to over 35 cities and 21 states. In 2008-2009, Pratham reached 33 million children through its Read India campaign and 500,000 children through its direct programs.

In Mumbai, Pratham reaches about 200,000 children in schools and slum communities; teaching them to read, write, do basic math and speak English; and helping them prepare for the State Government Class IV scholarship exam. In 2009, 21 of the 37 awardees in Mumbai were from Pratham classes. Pratham was instrumental in rescuing and repatriating over 35,000 children from the zari factories of Dharavi and other parts of Mumbai, which are now largely child labour free.

More recently, Pratham has changed the national dialogue around the quality of primary education through its flagship programs Read India and the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), focused on rural India. ASER is facilitated by Pratham to measure learning levels across rural India, probably the first of its kind and the largest. Read India is an innovative campaign to improve the reading and math skills of children, through accelerated learning techniques, implemented through lakhs of unpaid volunteers and government partnerships.

In 2009, Pratham received the CNN IBN Indian of the Year in the Public Service category and was designated as a “must buy” by the Abdul Jameel Poverty Action Lab, MIT. Pratham is also the recipient of the Henry Kravis award for Leadership for 2010.
