UMMEED - A Vision of Hope for Every Child

Ummeed works with children who have developmental disabilities and their families. Mumbai alone has over 650,000 children with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism, spina bifida, and visual and hearing impairments. Even more numerous are the children ‘ at risk’ - those with delayed development due to poverty related causes like malnutrition and poor exposure to language. Most have limited access to health care while services for disabilities are almost non-existent. Ummeed means hope - and that’s what families come in search of: hope that there is still a chance for their children; hope that they can still grow and learn in spite of their disabilities; hope that as parents they can still help their children to grow up happy and healthy.

The Ummeed team includes developmental pediatricians, speech and language therapists, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, special educators, behavior therapists and counselors. ‘Integrated care’ means the whole team works together to determine the best plan for each child, with parents actively involved in the process. And most importantly, Ummeed believes in ‘care for all’: children from all sections of society are served, and the poorest are treated free.

In addition to providing direct services to over 4500 children, Ummeed also reaches out to thousands more through programs in low-income communities and schools.
