The Pakistan cricket team sealed a nail-biting five-wicket win over India in their Super 4 match at the Asia Cup.
While Virat Kohli’s 60 helped India post 181/7, Pakistan rode on Mohammad Rizwan’s 71 to chase 182 with one ball to spare.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl first. Mohammad Hasnain coming in for Shahnawaz Dahani was the only change called out by captain Babar Azam.
For India, Rohit Sharma made a triple change with Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda and Ravi Bishnoi coming in for Ravindra Jadeja, Avesh Khan and Dinesh Karthik.
India recorded a confident start to their innings in the powerplay phase, scoring 62/1 on the board. Rohit Sharma was the first to depart for 28 as he tossed Haris Rauf’s delivery towards cover-point, where Khushdil Shah completed the catch.
KL Rahul lost his wicket on the first ball bowled outside the powerplay, with Mohammad Nawaz taking a catch at long-on and giving Shadab Khan the opening scalp of his spell.
While India reached the 100-run mark in 10.4 overs, they saw the likes of Suryakumar Yadav (13, 9.4 overs), Rishabh Pant (14, 13.5 overs), and Hardik Pandya (0, 14.4 overs) fail to make a substantial impact with the bat.
Virat Kohli played a confident knock of 60 runs off 44 balls to help India go past 150 in 17.1 overs and eventually post 181/7 at the end of their first innings.
Ravi Bishnoi made the initial breakthrough by dismissing Pakistan captain Babar Azam for 14. Bishnoi’s delivery pushed Azam to chop it through midwicket, but it found the safe hands of Rohit Sharma. The dismissal stayed after a review ruled out the possibility of a no-ball.
Pakistan ended their powerplay phase at 44/1 while reaching 50 in 6.4 overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal opened his account of wickets for the night with his floated delivery forcing Fakhar Zaman to pull a shot straight towards long on. Virat Kohli was the stationed fielder, and he completed the catch.
Mohammad Rizwan’s half-century propelled Pakistan to 100 in 12.2 overs, and he stitched a 73-run stand for the third wicket with Mohammad Nawaz (42) until the latter’s dismissal at 15.3 overs.
Rizwan’s determined innings of 71 runs in 51 balls ended in the 17th over. Hardik Pandya’s slow ball delivery invited the Pakistan batter to loft it towards long-off; however, it ended up in Suryakumar Yadav’s hands. A game-changing moment.
With two runs needed in three deliveries, Arshdeep Singh dismissed Asif Ali with a yorker delivery.
However, the game ended with new batter Iftikhar Ahmed hitting the winning runs and giving Pakistan a well-deserved five-wicket victory.
India will take on Sri Lanka on Tuesday, September 6, aiming to claim a win to stay in the hunt for a place in the Asia Cup 2022 final.
