“Deepak Chahar comes to Wankhede and takes wickets for fun”: Jayawardene

Think Wankhede, think swing, think new ball, think Deepak Chahar.

He’s tormented us in the past in the Yellow, coming in, knocking out a couple of batters, almost compulsively, in the powerplay. What better way of dealing with him than outbidding competition to get him on our side.

“He comes to Wankhede and takes wickets for fun,” said Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians Head Coach to Jio Cinema at the end of day 2 of the 2025 IPL mega auction. He also signaled a change in MI’s strategy now that someone as experienced as Deepak was coming in to join Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah.

“He is an experienced bowler. He’s been with Chennai for so many years and we have seen the quality. We wanted to go to an experienced Indian bowling option which we’ve never had in the past, so that gives us a combination change. Deepak fitted the bill. That was the change we wanted to do this year because it gives us a foreign spinner to play,” he said.

He’s now going to continue tormenting batters, only, for and not against us!
