The grand fiesta of cricket, the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup, is finally here! An event where the bewitchment of talents meets beguiling rivalries meets satisfying chaos is all set to go on floors in India in 2023.

So here’s our 18-member squad, of current and former MI players, who’ve gone on to win the ultimate silverware in international cricket - the World Cup medal around their neck.

• Let’s start with Ricky Ponting. The legendary Australian skipper - a record-holder for most matches as captain, best record as a World Cup captain (26 wins, two losses, one NR in 29 games) and is one of only three players in cricket history to win the ODI World Cup thrice. Two of these triumphs (2003 and 2007) came under his captaincy.

• Andrew Symonds (WC winner 2003, 2007) continues to enjoy the record of the Australian with the best batting average (103.00, min. 10 innings) in World Cup history.

• Sanath Jayasuriya was Player of the Tournament in 1996 for his return of 221 runs and scalped seven wickets.

• Sachin Tendulkar notched up 482 runs (two centuries, two fifties) to finish as the second-highest run-getter in the 2011 edition.

• Aaron Finch and Josh Hazlewood hold special mention on this list, as they are the only MI players in World Cup and IPL winning teams in the same calendar year. PS. Hazlewood was registered as an MI player for IPL 2015 but withdrew ahead of the season.
