“I know why I am here, what I can do; it’s about showing it to everyone”: Will Jacks
YASSSSSS!! A domination from every angle and we have registered back-to-back victories for the first time this campaign and the dressing room is buzzing in jubilation. 🥳
🗿 with the ball, 🗿 in the run chase and we did not let Sunrisers Hyderabad be on the frontfoot at any point in the clash!
Our all-rounder Will Jacks, who contributed with 2/14 (three overs) and 36 off 26 in the chase, appeared in the post-match press conference to give his assessment of the game.
“I'm really happy. I knew I was gonna play a role with the ball. They've got three left-handers in the top order. And I think we knew that it was gonna have a little bit of assistance,” he said.
Slow, gripping, attritional, that’s how the Wankhede wicket was on the night. The Sunrisers, coming off an epic run-chase, found it difficult to adjust, and it was down to adapting quickly, realizing what would work, and chalking that out, something our man did to perfection.
“I think you had to play smart, take the right options, which benefited us, obviously, by second. I think when we bowled, we adapted quite quickly, which is what good teams do,” he said.
Jacks was always expected to be a firecracker. He was always expected to light up the IPL. By his high standards and the expectations the cricketing world had on him, he’s had a quiet start to this season.
Not tonight! All he’s done, he says, is follow team orders. Orders to be himself, go out there and express himself, have fun, and win matches.
“Yeah. I would have loved to have contributed more in the first, first six games, first five games I've played. But the message has always been the same from the team.
“Mahela (Jayawardene) just wants me to go and express myself, put pressure on the opposition, and they've been very vocal, at training, and the message couldn't have been any clearer. I know why I'm here. I know what I can do, and it's about showing that on the pitch to everyone. And, yeah, I was happy with how I started today and took the initiative to the bowlers, but at the same time, made some good decisions on the wicket to add some assistance..”
That’s right then. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together. As we approach the halfway stage, the switches are clicking, the boxes are ticking. Will Jacks had his box checked in some style!
