Victory stamped and sealed in style! India took the scenic route — centuries, fifers, and some record-breaking cutscenes — to ensure England could not escape from the jaws of defeat by an innings and 64 runs. 

The visitors batted first, but they couldn’t go full-throttle on a batting-friendly track as the spin pairing of Kuldeep Yadav (5/72) and Ravichandran Ashwin (4/51) cut off all escape routes in the first innings. Ashwin, in fact, folded the ENG batting on Day 3 with his 36th Test fifer (5/77) in his 100th Test.

India, meanwhile, showed merit with the bat as their top five batters all registered 50-plus scores, including Rohit Sharma (103).

Kuldeep, Ashwin install STOP signboards

Barring Zak Crawley’s 108-ball 79, the English batting unit had little to no room to counter the intricate bowling spells of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Kuldeep, for one, was the star of the bowling in the first innings, and this came true with a special wrong-un delivery to bowl out Jonny Bairstow, who was also on the field for his 100th Test.

India bring the heat to the chilly mountains

Stepping out to bat, India brought the carnage upon the English bowlers as they sailed comfortably to a 400-plus total in the first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal (57), Rohit Sharma (103), Shubman Gill (110), debutant Devdutt Paddikal (65) and Sarfaraz Khan (56) were relentless in their run-scoring prowess and scripted just the fourth instance of IND’s top five batters scoring 50+ runs in a Test innings.

James Anderson unlocks new milestone

One of the positive and appreciative sights for players and fans alike at Dharamsala was witnessing James Anderson add another lucrative chapter to his seasoned book of records.

With his dismissal of Kuldeep Yadav, Anderson became the first-ever pacer to amass 700 Test wickets and only the third to do so behind Test icons Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708).

England came out to bat in session 2 on Day 3 but failed to produce a comprehensive performance on the field. Five of their batters scored in double digits, including a fighting half-century from Joe Root (84), whose wicket brought down the curtains on the Test match.

Bowling in the second innings of his 100th Test, Ravichandran Ashwin showed no signs of slowing down. In his 14 overs, he scalped five wickets for 77 runs while being supported by Jasprit Bumrah (2/38), Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) and Ravindra Jadeja (1/25).
