India, England draw first Test after a washout on Day Five

England won the toss and elected to bat first. Team India brought in KL Rahul in the side as the opening partner for Rohit Sharma. As for the bowling department, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur got the nod with Ravindra Jadeja being the lone spinner.

We take you through the talking points in the first Test between India and England.

DAY ONE

Jasprit Bumrah shines

In the first over of the series, Jasprit Bumrah made it count by sending back Rory Burns. A sharp inswinger set up the opener right in front of the stumps.

Bumrah kept Jos Buttler under watch for a reasonable period before dismissing him caught behind. He later dismissed the tailenders cheaply and finished with 4/46.

Joe Root leads from front

Walking out to bat at number four, Joe Root batted with patience throughout his presence at the crease. However, wickets kept falling for the hosts from the other end. He continued his stint before getting LBW by Shardul Thakur for 64.

Game-changer Shami

Mohammed Shami brought his A-game in the second session, dismissing Dominic Sibley in his second over after Lunch. He then picked Jonny Bairstow in the final ball of the session.

Coming back to complete his over post Tea, Shami got the better of Lawrence to finish with three wickets.

Rohit, Rahul remain at the crease

Batting for 13 overs in the middle, the Indian openers stayed at the crease with 21 runs on board. Both looked in complete control and were unbeaten on 9* each.

Batting first, England were bowled out for 183 runs at Trent Bridge. On the other hand, India were 21/0 at Stumps on Day One as they trail by 162 runs.

DAY TWO

Rohit, Rahul put up a big opening partnership

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul resumed their stint from Day One. Both openers began slowly but got going after an hour of patience and perseverance. Together, they stitched a 97-run partnership for the first wicket. This was the biggest opening stand for India in the last ten years.

KL Rahul went on to complete his half-century on comeback while Rohit got out for 36.

Back-to-back strikes for Anderson

James Anderson struck twice in a single over to switch the momentum in England's favour. He removed both Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli in consecutive deliveries. The Indian side went from 97/0 to 112/4 before rain stopped play.

Team India were 125/4 at Stumps on Day Two before rain stopped play. They were still trailing by 58 runs with Rahul and Pant staying unbeaten at the crease.

DAY THREE

KL Rahul falls short of another hundred on England soil

In his comeback innings, KL Rahul continued to bat well on Day 3. The opener went on to score 84 runs, missing out on a century. His knock allowed Team India to take the lead and retain the momentum after a good bowling performance.

Ravindra Jadeja scores a crucial fifty

Known for his ability to get important runs at the lower order, Ravindra Jadeja lived up to his reputation. While he didn't get to bowl much, the southpaw went on to register his 16th half-century in Test cricket.

Fifer for Ollie Robinson

Playing only his second Test match, Ollie Robinson ended up as the pick amongst the bowlers with a maiden five-wicket haul. After getting the first breakthrough of the innings, he acquired the wickets of both left-handers Pant and Jadeja. He then cleaned up India's tail to bowl them out.

Team India were bowled out for 278 with some handy contribution from Bumrah at number ten. They ended up with a lead of 95 runs. On the other hand, England were 25/0 at Stumps on Day Three with openers Dominic Sibley and Rory Burns at the crease. Day Four resumes at 3:30 PM IST on 7th August, 2021.

DAY FOUR

Joe Root leads from the front with a ton

Joe Root led from the front for the hosts on Day Four. Walking out to bat at number four, the England captain scored a fantastic century. He made the Indian bowlers toil hard before Bumrah's outswinger with the new ball ended his stay at the crease.

His knock allowed England to extend their lead above 200 runs for India.

Jasprit Bumrah picks a five-wicket haul

After accounting for the wicket of Zak Crawley early on Day Four, Jasprit Bumrah came back to dismiss Dominic Sibley later. However, it was his spell with the new ball that wreaked havoc in the English batting order. After getting centurion Root, he got consecutive wickets of Curran and Broad to complete his five-wicket haul.

This was his second fifer at Trent Bridge, after taking one at the same venue on the previous tour.

Team India lose KL Rahul early

Set a target of 209 to chase, the Indian openers started well with KL Rahul going after the bowlers. However, he got out for 26 after Broad got him caught behind. Team India were 52/1 at Stumps on Day Four with Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease.

With no rain interruptions, there was a lot of cricketing action. While India will consider themselves to be at the driver's seat, things could get trickier on Day Five. Both teams will be willing to get the better of each other and gain an edge in what's going to be a long series.

DAY FIVE

With heavy rain throughout the day at Nottingham, play was abandoned on Day Five without a single ball being bowled. This unfortunately resulted in the first Test match at Trent Bridge ending in a draw.

Virat Kohli felt that Team India had a good opportunity to chase the total on Day Five.

"We thought we had a chance right in front of us. We were on top in the game after batting and bowling well. It's a shame we couldn't complete Day Five."

Both teams will now face each other at the Home of Cricket, Lord's for the second Test match, starting from 12th August 2021. The Indian side will be happy with the performance of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and will be keen on carrying the momentum forward.
