Not the perfect ‘homecoming’ as Rahane leads CSK’s winning chase
All we can say is, let’s chin up and move on.
Chennai Super Kings outdid us with the bat, ball, and on the field. Our game was about good starts, but we couldn’t build on that momentum. Here are some of the game-changing moments:
Optimistic start turned around: Our batters didn’t have a good evening with the bat, we’ll be honest. Through Ishan, we were 61-1 at the end of the powerplay. But the spin storm by Ravi Jadeja and Mitch Santner riddled through our middle order as we lost four wickets in 16 balls.
David’s triple treat: The 17th over was all about Tim David. Dropped on the first ball, the 27-year-old showed he could hulk-smash should a window open. Sixteen runs (6, 4, 6) in overs 16.3, 16.4 and 16.5 injected some bright smiles on the faces of the anxious MI fans. The next ball *cough* saw David give away his wicket.
A ‘Shokeen’ cameo: He came. He saw. He smashed. Three boundaries at short third man, top-edge past MS Dhoni and over mid-off in a 13-ball 18! His name is Hrithik, and he put the bowlers to dance in his brief cameo.
Jas the One MI needed: No better way to start defending your score than an early clean strike. Jason Behrendorff broke through the gates of Devon Conway with his delivery ticking the bails off the leg stump.
Impact Player’s ‘impact’: Enter Kumar Kartikeya, the Impact Player. After conceding 10 in his two overs, the spinner broke the 43-run stand for the third wicket with his delivery inside-edging back onto Shivam Dube’s stumps.
Deteriorating pitch: It was our turf, but we didn’t maximise our chances. There are no excuses here, as Captain Rohit said, ‘We lost our way in the middle. Did not capitalise on the start.’
