Jasprit Bumrah: Must back yourself and keep things simple
Mumbai Indians secured qualification for the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday after overcoming Sunrisers Hyderabad in the super over. Both sides scored 162 on the night to take the game into a thrilling climax. Our leading wicket-taker this season, Jasprit Bumrah once again showed the world why he’s one of the best bowlers in international cricket.
After finishing with figures of 2 for 31 from his four overs, Bumrah was entrusted to bowl the super over for MI. As we’ve come to expect by now, Bumrah looked the least fazed by the situation and restricted SRH to just eight runs. “It’s always good. I was just focusing on what I have to do during the super over as well as whenever you are bowling in a tough situation. You try to back yourself as much as you can and try to keep things simple. So, that has always worked for me, trying to focus on that,” Bumrah told Hardik Pandya in a fun interview for iplt20.com featuring two of MI’s biggest talents.
Hardik also revealed that he had asked Bumrah for guidance in the last over of SRH’s innings. Bumrah’s reply though further emphasized the 25-year-old’s maturity in crunch circumstances. “During that time if many people are there, if we try to confuse you too much that doesn’t help. We want you to back yourself. Whatever ball you feel is right, that’s your decision,” Bumrah insisted.
Bumrah then changed roles and asked Hardik if bowlers are better off not bowling to the in-form all-rounder at the moment. “Maybe, I like to think that way. But you know everything is coming off so nicely. The (dressing room) environment is also so nice that you keep getting the confidence even when you are down. And I will thank everyone in the team and especially Bumrah and everyone who have been there during the toughest times and that’s our team culture and how we play,” Hardik opined.
While elaborating on if he feels any pressure when he comes out to bat, Hardik added: “I don’t feel pressure but the confidence from the last game definitely helps because I’ve been doing really well as you said. But today I made the game pretty interesting (laughs) and I hope everyone enjoyed and so does Bumrah, I think. It’s been fantastic, keep supporting us.”
