Reminiscing Sachin, Zak and Yuvi’s epic World Cup journey

Mumbai Indians’ 2011 World Cup winners, like the rest of the country, will look back on this day with nothing but fond memories. Our icon Sachin Tendulkar, Director of Cricket Operations Zaheer Khan and all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, were all part of India’s last World Cup-winning squad, playing crucial roles for the Men in Blue during the tournament.

Yuvraj, in fact, was the Man of the Series in the 2011 edition of the World Cup. He scored 362 runs, including four fifties and a century, at a staggering average of 90.50 and a strike-rate of 86.19 from eight innings. He was also a threat with the ball and picked up 15 wickets at an average of 25.13 and an economy of 5.02. The only player who took more wickets than Yuvi was our very own Zaheer Khan. India’s pace spearhead at the time, Zaheer ended the World Cup with 21 wickets – the joint-most by a payer at the tournament.

India beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in what was a fitting end to MI’s icon Tendulkar’s World Cup journey. Tendulkar, who hit two fifties and two centuries in the tournament, was India’s highest-scorer in the 2011 World Cup, scoring 482 runs at an average of 53.55 and a strike -rate of 91.98. The opposition dressing room on that day also featured a few familiar faces from the MI camp. Our head coach Mahela Jayawardene and leading franchise wicket-taker Lasith Malinga were a part of that epic final in Mumbai. Jayawardene even scored 103 in the grand finale, while Malinga was Sri Lanka’s best bowler on the day with figures of 2 for 42. However, in the end, team India reigned supreme at the Wankhede and gave Indian cricket fans moments to cherish for a lifetime.
