“We had to put Chennai behind us”: Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock was a beauty to watch in action today. His judgement of shots, him effortlessly sending the ball away to the boundaries, and standing through the innings to take the team home is just a small reminder of what he’s capable of doing.

Adjudged the Player of the Match for his 70* (50), his knock ensured MI were back to their winning ways leading the team to an easy victory.

After the game, he addressed the media, where he answered questions from the press. Below are excerpts from the same.

How do you like batting here after what you had to endure in Chennai?

“Obviously, it’s a little bit easy to bat out here. But it’s just that I like to get the job done. It was quite pleasant, but yeah, the game’s done and we’re just happy to win it.”

How important is the backing from the management and the captain?

“Yeah obviously, we spoke about it. We immediately knew that we needed to step up now. We had to put Chennai behind us, and go forward with the rest of the tournament. We know it’s important for this batting line-up of ours to start scoring some big runs for the team and start helping our bowlers. So glad we gave that help to our bowlers for the team to get over the line.”

Mumbai had struggled in the death overs before. Did you take it up as your responsibility as a top-three guy to see the team through till the end?

“Yeah, just generally, I think with our team, we’re always trying to get one of the top four to bat through to the last bit of our innings. But yeah, insane that we did that today, and we saw what happened. Obviously, it did help, the change of scenery from Chennai to Delhi. So, I’m sure there will be a lot more performances from us to come”.

How important is it to get your confidence back with such a wonderful knock?

“Obviously, it feels good to just score some runs in the game, especially when your knock gets the team over the line in the game. Obviously, with the help of everyone around me - Surya, Rohit at the start and Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard towards the end there. It was a big help. Good overall batting unit win. So yeah, proud of the guys.”

How challenging has it been to focus on the game considering the way the pandemic is affecting the country?

“To be honest, we trust in our doctors, so we’re pretty safe in our bubble. We feel safe so it’s been quite easy. Obviously, we still take precautions wherever we go. So yeah, I feel quite safe. I don’t know about other guys, I’m speaking for myself. So yeah, we need to get on with the game, and practice and everything. So it’s been chill.”

The Delhi leg has kickstarted well. Let's hope this is a sign for everything good that is to come!
