A look at the additions to MI squad for 2015

By Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians made 10 additions to their squad during the IPL 2015 auction. Here is the look at the new members, and what they bring to the Paltan

Aaron Finch

This aggressive opener is an ideal addition to the Mumbai Indians unit. A man, who is a consistent run-getter, and who is a terrific striker of the ball, on any cricket ground. Finch scored over 450 runs while leading the Pune Warriors during the IPL 2013, where he was a bit of one-man army. He had a pretty decent IPL 2014 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Mumbai Indians would be looking forward to some strong starts from him. Apart from having an international T20 century to his credit, Finch also bowls a bit of left-arm spin, something that he has often done during IPL. Coming in on the back of a solid century against England and a crucial knock against India in the semi-finals of the World Cup, Finch would be high on confidence following his country’s successful World Cup campaign.

Aiden Blizzard

Another powerful striker of the ball from Australia. Blizzard is not quite a new addition, having played seven games for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He was released ahead of the auction before being bought back. The Tasmanian has played some cracking knocks in various T20 leagues, and given an opportunity, would be keen to cement a permanent slot in the Mumbai Indians set up.

Mitchell McClenaghan

A left-arm pacer who bowls quick, and can swing the ball. All the cricket fans know what a genuinely quick pace bowler in the world cricket do. From Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc to Wahab Riaz and Trent Boult, the world has seen them all during the recently concluded World Cup. McClenaghan was part of the New Zealand World Cup squad, and his comfort levels with the Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach Shane Bond should come as an advantage. His ability to hurry even the best in business can be a real asset in a format that heavily favours the men with the willow.

Vinay Kumar

A crucial addition, especially with a legend like Zaheer Khan departing. It wouldn’t be advisable to compare Vinay with Zak for all the logical reasons, but he might well have to do the job the left-arm pacer was often doing for Mumbai Indians. Bowl with the new ball, and then at the death. Vinay is known for his commitment, and for his ability to bowl well in pressure situations. Has a good slower ball, can bowl Yorkers at a decent pace, and is a bowler in form. Having finished as the joint leading wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy season 2014-15, there will be no shortage of confidence for this smart bowler. Vinay is also a more than decent striker, and can play some cameos late down the order.

Parthiv Patel

For this wicket-keeper batsman, Mumbai Indians becomes the fifth IPL team that have signed him. A very experienced cricketer, Patel gives that piece of mind to the team think tank, with Aditya Tare being the other choice for that slot. He has played as an opener more often than not in T20 cricket, and is solid behind the wickets. Being a left-hander, it also adds to the balance of the batting unit, should the team think tank opt for a left and right hand combination at the top.

Pragyan Ojha

This left-arm orthodox spinner is one of the very few who have withstood the challenges of T20 cricket consistently. For someone who has played in all the IPL seasons, Ojha has a very impressive career economy rate of 7.34. Skippers have often used him in the Power-Play overs with great success. Ojha has been part of the Mumbai Indians squad before, and alongwith Harbhajan Singh, forms one of the best spin attack in the IPL. Just 11 shy off 100 IPL wickets, Ojha would be keen to go well past the milestone in IPL 2015.

Abhimanyu Mithun

Like his Ranji captain Vinay Kumar, Mithun is coming into IPL 2015 on the back of a terrific Ranji season. The likes of Vinay, Mithun gives Mumbai Indians that flexibility for the selection, keeping in mind the four foreign players rule. On a given day, Mumbai Indians can go in with just one foreign bowler, such is the strength of the Indian bowlers in the squad. Mithun has got the pace, bowls a good bouncer, and can hurry the batsmen on good tracks.

Akshay Wakhare

This Vidarbha off-spinner is coming into IPL 2015 on the back of a good Ranji season. He finished with three five-wicket hauls, including a 13-wicket match haul against Gujarat. His performance was crucial in Vidarbha making it to the knockouts. Wakhare is quite a decent late order batsman, and can come in handy towards the end of the innings.

Nitish Rana

An attacking left-hand batsman, he is another off-spinner in the Mumbai Indians’ ranks. This Delhi lad is yet to make his first-class debut, but has learned a lot by rubbing shoulder with the likes of Rajat Bhatia, Mithun Manhas in the Delhi nets. With age on his side, Rana would be hoping to make the most of the exposure he would get with the Mumbai Indians.

Siddhesh Lad

This talented batsman scored his first first-class ton for Mumbai in the 2014-15 season. And that ton came against a strong Karnataka bowling unit. Rated highly by his team-mates, Lad also bowls off-spin, and is a handy domestic addition to the Mumbai Indians squad.

Hardik Pandya

This bowling all-rounder played a crucial role in Baroda winning the 2013-14 Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. He has got the experience of first-class cricket, and would be keen to carry it into his debut IPL season, where he can learn a lot from the best in the world.
