“Amelia’s run-out was massive, she could’ve gotten us 180+”: Charlotte Edwards

By Mumbai Indians

A two-wicket loss off the last ball of the innings, with matters just being a millimeter away was a tough loss for the Mumbai Indians to kick off their WPL 2025 campaign. Mumbai Indians’ Head Coach, Charlotte Edwards, was at the post match press conference at the end of the first game against the Delhi Capitals, and shared her thoughts about the game, the positives and much more..

Thoughts on the match

It’s a bit like last year. We got one up there and to go down this year is difficult, but there is a lot for us to be positive about. Certainly the way we fought back with the bowling.

On Niki Prasad’s batting at the death

She’s come off a brilliant World Cup with India. They (DC) played well, put us under pressure and probably we didn’t execute as well as we’d have liked towards the death. But that happens. It is a game of cricket and unfortunately we were just on the wrong side of it.

On the discussions she’d be having in the dressing room

You just try and pull out all the positives and look at the areas where we can improve as a side. We’ve got a few from tonight. We should have got ourselves to 180+ which we didn’t and that hurt us at the end of the game. Shafali (Verma) played brilliantly. That happens in T20 cricket. That is what I was proud of our group, we kept coming hard. We just didn’t give up. We kept being aggressive with the ball. There will be a lot of stuff I’d want the team to continue to do, just a few areas where we need to sharpen up, which we’ll do over the next couple of days. Looking forward to our game against Gujarat.

On multiple close decisions by the third umpire

You’ve got to stay pretty calm. It is hard when so many decisions go to the third umpire. The result of the game is looking at the big screen. I’ve played the game and been around the game to know that we just have to move on.

On MI’s  late-order batting collapse

I think it’s really hard when you follow a big partnership like Harman (Kaur) and Nat (Sciver-Brunt) had. They were making it look so easy. The run-out of Amelia Kerr was massive in this game. We were going really well. She’s got a really calm head. She would have gotten us to 180+ and allowed Nat to play more freely. At the end, Nat had to farm the strike and we had a couple of casualties there with the run-outs. Not batting our overs out is an issue but it certainly is not a concern for us.

Thoughts on the pitch

It's been a great wicket. The last two evenings have been a fantastic start to the WPL. I’d like the boundary size to be a little bit bigger (laughs) but that’s what we are playing up against.
