"As a team, we were with Hardik. It was us against the world": Bumrah

By Mumbai Indians

From a teenager who caught the eyes more for his unorthodox action in the IPL to being the Player of the Tournament for India in the victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, Jasprit Bumrah’s cricketing journey has been nothing short of incredible.

But one thing that has been a constant is the self-belief that the Mumbai Indians’ pace spearhead possesses. Bumrah was always clear about what he wanted, put in the hard yards and backed himself to go the distance.

“In my head even when I started I would always think that I am very good because if I don't believe in myself who else will? I never really faced struggles to get into the team but I never really had a lot of formal cricket growing up. I have always believed in my action,” Boom Boom said in an interview with Indian Express.

Boom Boom is any captain’s dream and his association with Rohit Sharma was one made in heaven, and the MI Paltan are fortunate to have them home. The Rohit-Bumrah combo has been at the forefront of our five IPL titles as the MI faithful have lived the dream together with them.

Whenever Hitman needs a breakthrough there is just a look and Bumrah is at service. Even in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, whenever Rohit was in dire straits, Bumrah would be there on the line of fire to shield the team. Powerplay, Middle overs, death overs, new ball or old ball. Nothing matters for Boom Boom as he delivered in style.

“I am grateful and had the privilege of playing under Rohit for a long period of time. When I started playing in the IPL, I used to go and tell Rohit, you set the field, I am going to bowl this ball, whatever you feel is right, you set the field, I trust you. He has seen my journey of evolving as a player,” Bumrah spoke in reverence of his senior pro.

Boom Boom was all-praise for Hitman’s captaincy as the words poured from his heart with love and respect in equal measure.

“Rohit has a lot of empathy for bowlers, understands players’ emotions, he understands what a player is going through. He listens to everyone and then decides what works well for him. He knows how to manage players and create an atmosphere where it is a comfortable space and players can play with freedom,” Boom Boom said.

Bumrah who breathes fire with the ball also has a heart that beats for the team. He does not let any teammate down in times of distress.

Boom Boom was quick to extend a comforting arm to Hardik Pandya, our new skipper, during a tough IPL season.

It's an emotion-driven country and we understand that fans do get emotional and players are also emotional. Sometimes your own fans are not speaking well of you. It is the way and you have got to take it on your chin because how can you go out there and stop people.”

“They are screaming but then that inner circle helps you. We as a team do not encourage that or promote that. We as a team were with Hardik. We were talking to him and if he needs support, his family will always be there.”

“We as a team cannot leave a man behind and we are there for each other and to help each other. We are together and it is us against the world,” Bumrah explained on how everyone in the team rallied behind their new skipper at a difficult time.

Boom Boom, who picked up the prized scalp of Virat Kohli on his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2013, has been our proud soldier for the past 12 years and has become one among the Paltan family. Unsurprisingly, the pacer is not sure about an IPL career with a team other than MI.

“No idea. I haven't really thought about it. It has always been Mumbai Indians from the first game I played for them. It has been more than 10 years.”

The Paltan will wish Boom Boom would rattle more batters, donning the Blue and Gold jersey, with his searing pace, the unerring yorkers and a bagful of variations. The Boom Boom-MI story is box-office.
