The Indian cricket team will look to grab their first win of the Super Four round when they take on Sri Lanka in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, September 6.
India are coming off a five-wicket loss to Pakistan in their first Super Four fixture and will now require wins against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan to have a realistic chance of reaching the Asia Cup 2022 final.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka has a slight momentum as they opened their Super Four account with a four-wicket win over Afghanistan with five balls to spare.
Here are some talking points ahead of what possibly will be a Do or Die encounter for India:
India vs Sri Lanka head-to-head in Asia Cup
India and Sri Lanka have faced each other 20 times in the Asia Cup, with either side claiming 10 wins each.
The last meeting between India and Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup ended with the Men in Blue claiming a five-wicket victory in the 2016 matchup. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 56 helped India chase 139 by scoring 142/5 with four balls to spare.
Regarding overall T20Is, India has the upper hand with 17 wins in 25 clashes against Sri Lanka, including three successive victories in their last five meetings.
Hence, Rohit Sharma’s India will be overwhelming favourites to beat Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Players to watch out
Although his 44-ball knock of 60 runs went in vain against Pakistan, Virat Kohli hit a second successive fifty in the Asia Cup 2022 to take his tally to 154 runs in three innings. Kohli has an impressive record against the Lankan Lions (339 runs in seven matches at an average of 84.75) and will hope to inspire India to victory with a top score once again.
Meanwhile, the opening pairing of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will hope to carry forward the partnership form they set against Pakistan. Their 54-run stand in 31 balls in the previous game meant the Rohit-KL pair have now tallied 14 fifty-plus partnerships in the T20I format, and they will hope to provide India with a confident headstart on Tuesday.
As for Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga will be the key player. The all-rounder has registered 45 runs and 10 wickets in six meetings with India, but his overall impact in T20 cricket in the last few years makes him a dangerous player.
With their title defence in the balance, India battle Sri Lanka in a must-win Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, September 6. The game will start at 7.30 PM IST (Indian Standard Time).
Come on Paltan, let’s cheer for our Men in Blue!
