* Clap, clap, clap * Harmanpreet Kaur – First player to 150 T20I caps

By Mumbai Indians

Moga-turned-Mumbai chi mulgi created history, becoming the first cricketer to play 150 T20Is. And guess who she went past? Her fellow MI counterpart, the Hitman, Rohit Sharma, who’s on 148 T20Is.

From the mohallas of Moga to the magnanimities of Melbourne, Harman has come a long way in etching her mark on the global cricketing canvas. She has already led India to two finals of multi-nation tournaments - the ICC Women’s World T20 2020 in Australia and the Commonwealth Games 2022 in England.

Her international journey has been nothing but illustrious. So, let us go down memory lane and cherish some of her golden moments:

11 June 2009: The T20I debut cap arrives

2009 was a special year for Harman. Just a day before her 20th birthday, she featured in her maiden ODI and three months later was on the flight to England to play the inaugural ICC Women’s World T20. She made her debut against the hosts in the group opener. Coming lower down the order at number eight, she scored the same number of runs in that game, which India lost by 10 wickets.

31 October 2012: Leading India for the first time

The responsibility of leading the Indian team came all of a sudden in the final of the 2012 Asia Cup. In the absence of the regular captain, Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet, her deputy then, was as cool as a cucumber as she took over the reigns and led India to an 18-run win. India bagged their fifth Asia Cup title, the first in the T20 format.

10 November 2016: Aye, aye, full-time skip!

The vice-captain climbs up the ladder. In her first match as a full-time T20I skipper, she packed a punch with a delectable 68* off 50, an entertaining innings that was studded with six fours and three sixes. Despite her belligerent knock, India ended up on the losing side as the West Indies proved too hot to handle. Taking the loss in her stride, she has matured as a captain over the years and enjoyed a decent success rate of 60% in 95 matches. Leading a side which has expectations from over a billion people is not a walk in the park. Harmanpreet has shouldered the responsibility gracefully and is number two on the list of most matches as captain behind Australia’s Meg Lanning (98).

9 November 2018: That 103*(51)

T20 World Cups and Harmanpreet Kaur, it’s been a lovely partnership. Nine years after her debut in the event, she entered the record books to become the first Indian to score a century in WT20Is. Not just this, she also became the highest-scorer at number five in the format. While the memories of Thor going hammer and tongs against Australia in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final when she bludgeoned 171 not out were still fresh, another blinder was pulled off. This time it was the other trans-Tasmanian rival, New Zealand, at the receiving end of the blitzkrieg.

When Harman breaks records for breakfast

150 T20Is checked. 3000 T20I runs checked. What’s next for the Sup-Har-man? The new year has started on a high. She is now the first player to play 150 T20Is across men’s and women’s games and also the first Indian woman to breach the 3000-run mark. What could be the next thing on her mind? ICC Women’s T20 World Cup? Surely a WPL title as well?
