CWC 2023 | INDvNED: UNBEATEN in the league - 9 opponents, 9 wins

By Mumbai Indians

Entertainment. Entertainment. Entertainment. That was all that transpired in India’s enthralling 160-run triumph over the Netherlands.

India showed their hospitality to the Netherlands’ bowlers uniquely, as the top-order - led by skipper Rohit Sharma (61) - notched 50-plus scores to guide the hosts to a total of 410/4 in 50 overs.

Conversely, the Netherlands plotted 250 on the board in 47.5 overs, with Teja Nidamanuru (54) and Sybrand Engelbrecht (45) putting up a confident fight against India’s in-form bowlers.

Here are the highlights of India’s final group-stage game of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Five-star batting

The top order of the Indian cricket team was relentless and magical - simultaneously - as they gave a textbook masterclass on experienced batting to the Netherlands bowlers. Here’s a listed recap.

- Skipper Rohit Sharma (61) and Shubman Gill (51) stitched their maiden century partnership (100 runs in 71 balls) in CWC 23

Rohit Sharma hit his fourth 50-plus score in CWC 23 and achieved five milestones.

Shreyas Iyer scored his maiden century (128 not out) in the Cricket World Cup.

KL Rahul hit the fastest World Cup century (62 balls) by an Indian batter.

KL Rahul (102 vs Netherlands, 2023) joined Rahul Dravid (145 vs Sri Lanka, 1999) as the only Indian wicket-keepers to hit a hundred in the ODI World Cup.

This is the first instance of India’s top-five Indian batters (Rohit Sharma - 61, Shubman Gill - 51, Virat Kohli - 51, Shreyas Iyer - 128*, KL Rahul - 102) amassing 50-plus scores in a World Cup innings.

A successful bowling exhibition

Rohit Sharma ensured the bowling attack would entertain the Indian fans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium after the batting onslaught in the first half of IND vs NED.

Mohammed Siraj drew the first blood for India, combining with wicket-keeper KL Rahul to dismiss Wesley Barresi (4). He claimed his second of the evening in the 38th over (Sybrand Engelbrecht - 45).

Kuldeep Yadav trapped Colin Ackermann (35) for LBW in the second over of his spell and dispatched Logan van Beek (16) with a clean dismissal in his final over.

Ravindra Jadeja claims the wicket of Max ODowd (30) off the first ball of his spell. Adds the scalp of Roelof van der Merwe (16) to his collection in his eighth over. Thus, Jaddu became the Indian spinner with the most wickets in a single CWC edition (16 wickets).

Jasprit Bumrah opened his account in INDvNED in the sixth (Bas de Leede) and ninth over (Aryan Dutt)

Virat Kohli (1/13) bowled three overs and claimed his first World Cup wicket with the dismissal of Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards.

Aapla Dada Surya and Shubman Gill showcased their bowling skills with two overs each.

Rohit Sharma bowled in ODIs for the first time since 2016 and became the third Indian captain (Kapil Dev - 1983 and 1987, Sourav Ganguly - 2003) to take a wicket in an ODI World Cup.

Brief scores: India 410/4 (Shreyas Iyer 128*, KL Rahul 102; Bas de Leede 2/82) BEAT Netherlands 250 (Teja Nidamanuru 54, Sybrand Engelbrecht 45;  Mohammed Siraj 2/29, Jasprit Bumrah 2/33, Kuldeep Yadav 2/41) by 160 runs.
