From Upcoming ICC Events, To Working with Rahul Dravid, And Much More – The Hitman takes a deep-dive into his
Being captain of the Indian team is among the most high-pressure jobs in the world. It comes with immense expectations. However, Ro is staying as composed as ever in his new role. Honour and excitement are what came through from this interview of his with BCCI. Here are the key points from it:
On the privilege of being chosen to lead:
" I'm deeply honoured and grateful for this opportunity. It's a huge responsibility and I look forward to captaining Team India in white ball cricket. It's going to be an exciting journey and something I'm looking forward to."
On working with new head coach Rahul Dravid:
" We all know how he has played his cricket. Very hard and tough but, at the same time there's a sense of relaxation as well. It's important to keep the atmosphere light and cheerful when you're doing your job on the field which is so demanding. It's good to have him on board and it'll be a fruitful one for the future, I hope.”
On areas for improvement for the team:
" There will be challenges for sure and how you come out of those is very important. In the past, we've been in situations like 10/3 or 15/2 and we haven't really recovered from that and that's one of the things we have to keep in mind. There are other areas to improve as well because getting better as a team doesn't stop.”
On the legacy Virat Kohli has left behind as skipper:
" He's put the team in a situation where there's no looking back. Those 5 years when he's led the team, he led from the front every time. There was clear grit and determination to win every game and that was the message to the entire squad. We had a great time playing under him. I personally have enjoyed playing with him and will continue to do so.”
On upcoming ICC events:
" There are a lot of World Cups coming up and India will be eyeing to do well in all those World Cups for sure. Our focus will be to win championships of course but, there's a process which needs to be followed. There are a lot of things we need to get right before we think of the end goal. We last won an ICC tournament in 2013. I don't think we've done anything wrong post that. We've played as a team but we haven't got that extra inch that we look forward to and that can happen. International cricket is very demanding and that's the challenge. We're all professionals and we need to put the right step forward and make sure we put the right things in the right bag.
His message to the boys:
" My message to the boys will be to not think about the finals and to focus on the process. We need to keep ticking the small boxes that are in front of us and then we look at our end goal.” The early signs to the Hitman’s tenure as captain look promising. He has all the pieces to lead India to glory. Him and coach Dravid seemingly just need to put them in place and ICC trophies should not be too far along. Paltan, join us in wishing Ro all the best as he embarks on this new journey!
