India suffer a crushing defeat at Adelaide Oval

By Mumbai Indians

After being in a strong position on Day Two, the Indian batting lineup was jolted by the Australian pace attack and bundled for an embarrassing 36 all out.

The Pink-ball Test finished in less than three days as the hosts went on to win the match by eight wickets. They now lead the four-match series by 1-0.

We take you through some of the talking points of the first Test match.

Virat Kohli steps up with the bat

After India were reduced to 32/2 on Day One, Virat Kohli led from the front with a crucial knock of 74. Batting with Pujara and Rahane, the Indian captain took the visitors to 188/3 before a confusion in the middle meant he was run-out.

Cummins and Starc trouble India’s openers

Mitchell Starc struck on the second ball of the match as he dismissed Prithvi Shaw for nought. Cummins accounted for Mayank's wicket as India lost both their openers early in the first innings.

Bumrah bowls and bats

Jasprit Bumrah struck early for India as he got rid of both openers Matthew Wade and Joe Burns in the first session. He continued to bowl with great precision and created a lot of pressure on the Aussie batting order.

Later on Day Two, he even came out to bat as a night watchman and managed to stay unbeaten till Stumps.

Ravichandran Ashwin stands out

After being the only spinner to dismiss Steve Smith in the IPL, Ashwin continued his good form against Australia's run-machine. He even picked the wickets of Travis Head and Cameron Green in the second session. Later, he came back to account for Nathan Lyon to finish with figures of 4/55. This was his best performance on Australian soil.

Tim Paine - last man standing

As Australia continued to lose wickets regularly in the first innings, Paine continued to hold one end strong. He batted with the tailenders and ensured the hosts came closer to India's total. His innings of 73 not out helped Australia restrict the lead to just 53 runs.

Lowest total

After being 9/1 at Stumps on Day 2, India lost nightwatchman Bumrah early in the day. What followed was probably one of the most horrible collapses in India's cricketing history. Cummins evoked fire with the ball as he ripped apart India's middle order. In no time, he got rid of Pujara and Kohli.

Following that, it was an extraordinary Josh Hazlewood show. After accounting for Mayank Agarwal, he sent the lower-order packing and finished with a five-wicket haul. India registered their lowest ever total of 36 after Shami was retired hurt. No batsman managed to cross double figures.
