IPL 2022: How the new 10-team league structure works and who MI will play

By Mumbai Indians

For the first time since 2011, the IPL is set to have 10 teams competing for the trophy. While an eight-team league had each team playing the other twice in the league stage, there is a slight modification for a 10-team league.

All 10 teams were seeded from 1-10 based on the number of titles won and the number of finals played. The seeding is as follows:

Rank

No. of titles

No. of finals played

CSK

KKR

The 10 teams have been divided into two groups - Group A and Group B - with five teams in each group. Teams with an odd-number seed are in Group A while the even-number seeded teams are in Group B.

MI are in Group A with KKR, RR, DC and LSG.

Each team will play 14 league matches - twice against five teams and once against four other teams.

The teams in Group A will play each other twice in the league stage. The teams in Group A will also play the team in the same horizontal line in Group B twice.

Group A teams will play every other team in Group B once in the league stage.

So, MI will play KKR, RR, DC, LSG and CSK twice. They will also take on SRH, RCB, PBKS and GT once in the league stage.

A single points table will be maintained and the top-four teams after the league stage will progress to the playoffs.
