The IPL countdown: 5 days to go – 5 IPL titles!
The time is nigh. Two months of high-octane cricket await us. Mumbai Indians and the IPL are returning to the iconic Wankhede Stadium with a million voices singing #MumbaiMeriJaan.
Start counting them down. FIVE. Yea, five days remain, and synonymous with five, are our five title wins. In five days, Aamchi Mumbai will see ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma and his Class of 2023 don the iconic Blue and Gold, as we head to Bengaluru to take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday (April 2). And so, ahead of the curtain raiser of our campaign, we look back at five iconic milestones in our 16-year-long IPL journey.
5 - Number of IPL titles MI have won
2013 - Mumbai Indians had scores to settle with Chennai Super Kings, since it was the first championship title match since the 2010 final that CSK won. LLord Kieron Pollard smashed a 32-ball 60 to help us to a fighting match-winning score of 148/9. The bowlers, led by Mitch Johnson and the ever trustworthy Lasith Malinga then reduced CSK to 99/9 in 17.4 overs, and then bundled them out for 125 despite MS Dhoni’s unbeaten cameo of 63. #1.
2015 - MI vs CSK in IPL finals, Round 3. Lendl Simmons and Ro-hit made merry of the CSK bowlers with respective half-tons to see Mumbai post 202 in 20 overs. On the big night of a final, this was too much. Led by Mitchell McClenaghan, MI squeezed their way through the Chennai batting order in another one-sided finale! #2.
2017 - Nail-biting, so much so that by the end of the 2017 IPL final, there were none left. Thanks to Krunal Pandya (47), MI rallied to post 129/8. Steve Smith (51) and Ajinkya Rahane (44) led Rising Pune Supergiants’ chase and brought the equation to 11 required in six balls. Mitchell Johnson conceded a boundary on his first delivery but would redeem himself with back-to-back wickets. A boundary separated MI and RPS from a win, but a flat throw from Jagadeesh Suchith, and a diving run-out by Parthiv Patel, saw use sneak home by the barest of margins: ONE WHOLE RUN. #3.
2019 - Remember the time MI became the most successful IPL franchise? This is it. The game? MI vs CSK. Who won it for us? Lasith Malinga. In a game filled with below-par batting performances on both sides, fielding misses, and a lot of pressure telling on the faces of the players, MI relied once again on Malinga to cheat the guillotine. CSK needed two to win off the final ball, but Slinga and his slower, dipping cutter to trap Shardul Thakur plumb LBW was just the stuff of dreams. #4.
2020 – A season of peak dominance. Barring the half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer (65 not out) and Rishabh Pant (56), Delhi Capitals were at the mercy of Trent Boult (3/30) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (2/29). They managed 156/7. MI's confidence in the run chase was akin to a great orchestra performance, with skipper Rohit Sharma the concertmaster. His 40-run partnerships for the first three wickets drove the team to a comfortable position, with the victory achieved asily in 18.4 overs. #5
