IPL 2025 retentions - All you need to know before October 31st

Although the IPL 2025 retention Rules and FAQs are already publicised, we totally acknowledge that some doubts are still left and remain uncleared. Kaahi chinta naka karu, aamhi aahot na!
Read on to understand the nitty-gritty of the Indian Premier League 2025 retention rules.
1. A franchise can retain a maximum of six players, either in the retention phase or through the Right-To-Match (RTM) card during the mega auction.
Out of these, a maximum of five can be capped players whereas atmost two players can be uncapped.

Let’s consider a situation where capped player 2 gets paid INR 17 crores by his team in order to retain him. In such a case, the franchise will see INR 17 crores cut from their purse, which is an additional 3 crores above his bracketed value.
On the other hand, if a franchise decides to play capped player 2 INR 12 crores - under his actual value - they would have INR 14 crores cut from their auction purse.
3. The following two scenarios are the breakdown for the no. of players retained w.r.t the deduction from the purse of INR 120 Crore.

There’s no cap on the no. of overseas players that can be retained. A franchise can opt for only foreigners to be retained. Moreover, the purse deduction would go about as usual in such an event.
5. Who falls under the ‘uncapped player’ category?
Any cricketer who is yet to debut for his national team, irrespective of the format, will come under the ‘uncapped player’ category.
Furthermore, for Indian players, a capped player will be deemed uncapped if he hasn’t been a part of the starting XI in an international match (T20Is, Tests or ODIs) in the last five years or does not have a central contract with BCCI.
