“It was a great fightback”: Rohit Sharma
Yet another close game, down to the last over, but this time it is the Mumbai Indians that come out on the winning side. Scripting the first win of the season, MI beat KKR by 10 runs, and how!
Put to bat first by KKR, MI put up a par total of 152/10 in 20 overs. It was the bowlers who came to the party and ensured an MI victory! First, Rahul Chahar’s 4-wicket haul, getting all of the first four, followed by Krunal’s economical bowling of 4-0-13-2.
A sensational last over by Trent Boult ensured KKR got only 4 out of it when they needed 15. He also took out Andre Russel and Pat Cummins. Nitish Rana’s 57 (47) did not have the impact KKR would have hoped it would in this game.
Below are some excerpts from the presentation ceremony.
“Keeping the dots building is the golden rule”: Trent Boult
“It is a good feeling to close out a game like that. It shows the importance of staying in it. Four tidy overs from Krunal - it played a big role in containing KKR’s runs. Bumrah was disappointed he dropped the catch off Russel, but he was crucial in getting us back in the game.”
“I haven't played too much of cricket here, but these guys are very experienced, our spinners did well. They kept the dots building - I suppose it's the golden rule. It is never an easy start on wickets like this. It’s the cliche of putting pressure on the new batsmen.”
“It was a complete team effort and credit to all the bowlers”: Rohit Sharma
“It was a great fightback, an excellent fightback by each one of them. You don't see a game like this often. We got lots of confidence from this game and now, we move forward. KKR batted brilliantly in the powerplay, but Rahul came and got us crucial wickets in the middle. Krunal bowling those overs at the end was vital as well. It was a complete team effort and credit to all the bowlers. As batters, you need to carry on.”
“The trend in Chennai is you can't hit from ball one. You have to plan before you go into bat. We were 15-20 runs short. We should have batted well at the fag end. We need to understand how we need to bat at the death but I don't want to take any credit away from the team.”
“SKY has carried his form well. He plays fearless and it's a positive sign for us in the first few overs. When he plays those shots it doesn't look like he's taking risks, those are cricketing shots. We need a guy who bats fearlessly. I'm glad that we could get some partnerships in the middle and get a decent total. We need to just figure out how to finish innings in the last 5 overs. We've done that in the past.”
“Rohit shows a lot of confidence in me”: Rahul Chahar
“They had started well, I knew that on this pitch it was the spinners who had to do it. I've played 2-3 seasons so I had the confidence to get Gill out, and I know him since the U-19 days and I knew what to do. My strength is to turn the ball quickly, at speeds of 90kph. I think Tripathi's caught behind was my favourite wicket because of that. I also had an idea that Rana would give me a chance and so I pushed a flipper outside off.”
“There's a lot of benefit from having guys like Rohit. He shows a lot of confidence in me. There are times when I'm being hit around and he has more confidence in me than I do in myself. Mumbai Indians is a team that looks after you really well even during the off-season.”
