Last-over heartbreak vs LSG; play-off hopes will have to wait

By Mumbai Indians

Let’s rip the band-aid straight off - it wasn’t the result we wanted and the loss at the Ekana tonight definitely hurt our playoff hopes.

And to top it all off, the wait for our first win over Lucknow Super Giants continues. 3-0, that hurts too. But credit to the boys for putting up a fight and taking the game into the final over.

Also fear not, our boys are still very much in the playoff race and are still in the top four. We get to decide our fate at the Wankhede, our home, this Sunday when we host Sunrisers Hyderabad. We believe, and so should you Paltans.

So close, yet so far….

Chasing down 178 for the vital win, it all started the usual way….with an Ishan Kishan onslaught of course. And soon enough, the Hitman joined the party. The 50-run opening stand took just 35 balls.

We lost our first wicket with 90 on the board, and Ishan fell shortly after getting to his fifty. SKY and Nehal Wadhera, uncharacteristically, failed to fire tonight and we looked to be in a spot of bother.

Twists, turns, more twists, more turns

They said the Ekana pitch would be a rip-roaring turner. But nothing matched up to the script written for today's game. With 30 to get in the final two overs, we needed a big over and our big man, Tim David, stepped up. Two heaves across the boundary off Naveen-ul-Haq, some precious extras, and we were left with 11 to get off the last over. However, a good final over by Mohsin Khan under pressure meant we were five runs short. It is a tough one to swallow!

Stoinis rescues the LSG innings

Rohit won the toss, elected to field and the bowlers delivered. Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla combined to get rid of LSG’s top three for just 35.

The hosts, however, found their anchors in captain Krunal Pandya and Marcus Stoinis. The duo put on 82 runs for the fourth wicket before Krunal was forced to walk off with an injury. However, Stoinis powered forward to score an unbeaten 89 and led LSG to 177/3.

Don't worry, we have the Wankhede

Oh there's enough hope still. For all you know, we could end up in the top two as well. But our fate will be back in our hands come Sunday (May 21) as SRH come home. Until then, save your nails, and save your time on the calculators!

Brief Scores: Lucknow Super Giants -177/3 (Marcus Stoinis 89, Krunal Pandya 49, Jason Behrendorff 2/30) beat Mumbai Indians - 172/5 (Ishan Kishan 59, Rohit Sharma 37, Ravi Bishnoi 2/26) by five runs
