One of the greatest cricketers to play the game, India captain Mithali Raj announced her retirement from the game on June 9th, 2022 with a heartfelt note on social media.

It was a career that spanned a magnificent 22 years, starting with her international debut for India on June 26, 1999 against Ireland in an ODI at Milton Keynes, UK.

In what was a sign of things to come, Mithali duly hit 114* on debut and at 16 years and 205 days, still holds the record for the youngest player to score a century in WODIs.

It is the format which she played the most in her career and dominated it like no other. Mithali Raj is the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs, with 7805 runs with an average of 50.68 in 232 matches, 155 of which were as captain of the team.

She has played the most WODIs and also captained the most number of times in WODIs in history.

Mithali Raj is also the first woman to score half-centuries in seven consecutive WODI matches.

Apart from her incredible batting, Mithali was also one of the finest captains India had. She led the team to a historic 1-0 Test series win in England in 2014 and is also the first Indian captain - male or female - to lead the country to two ODI World Cup finals.

Mithali Raj also had a storied Test career, with 699 runs in 12 Tests. She remains India’s only double-centurion in women’s Tests and her score of 214 against England in 2002 is the second-highest in a women’s Test innings.

She also played 89 T20Is, scoring 2364 runs with 17 fifties and a highest score of 97*.

Mithali retires with 10,868 international runs to her name, comfortably the highest tally in women’s cricket history. The curtains have come down on one of the most legendary careers in cricket.

Thank you for all the memories, Mithali!
