MI, Kings of the big finals

By Mumbai Indians

It’s been more than forty-eight hours since the Mumbai Indians burst into celebrations after mauling Chennai Super Kings to win the eighth edition of the Indian Premier League but, the euphoria still isn’t dying down. After all, Rohit Sharma’s troupes have yet again shown that when it comes to the big finals, Mumbai Indians are near-invincibles.

With the 41-run comprehensive victory over league stage toppers Chennai Super Kings, the Mumbai Indians not only completed a glorious turnaround to a season that started with four losses on the trot but, also completed a hat-trick of victories in the big finals. After the double crown of 2013, which saw Rohit lift both the IPL and the Champions League Twenty20, the Mumbai Indians couldn’t make it to a final in 2014. But come 2015, and the first tournament they have participated in, Rohit’s men rose to the occasion yet again to make it three wins in a row, in three final appearances.

Their second IPL title also helped the Mumbai Indians continue their enviable record in all the finals. With four wins in the five finals they have featured in, Mumbai Indians now have the best win-loss percentage among five IPL teams that have featured in more than one summit clash [see table].

What has been equally impressive about Mumbai Indians’ final record is the manner in which they have dominated the big match. In fact, the narrowest margin in a final that the Mumbai Indians featured in, was their maiden final appearance, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings in 2010, by 22 runs.

Since then, they have virtually swept all the four finals they have featured in. In the 2011 CLT20, which opened Mumbai Indians trophy cabinet, Mumbai Indians outplayed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 31 runs, in a low-scoring game. Cut to IPL 2013, which was their first IPL triumph, the final saw Mumbai Indians bettering arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs. The 2013 CLT20 final saw Mumbai Indians outwitting Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs. And then came IPL 2015. In a repeat of the 2013 final, at the same historic venue of Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Mumbai Indians went a step ahead, and annihilated Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs. The margin of victories underlines, that Mumbai Indians become unstoppable when their juggernaut starts rolling. The hallmark of a team in form, is to go all the way when it’s on a song. And, Mumbai Indians have displayed it in ample measure in each of their last four triumphant outings.

With an able leader like Rohit leading them to three titles in as many seasons, Paltan can jolly well hope for such happy days to continue in the coming years too!
