MUMBAI INDIANS – WPL 2025 CHAMPIONS!! WOAHHHHHHHH!!
At the Brabourne. Versus the Delhi Capitals. In an absolute nail-biter of a game. 2023 has repeated itself in 2025. MUMBAI INDIANS HAVE WON THEIR SECOND TITLE IN THE WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE. By the Marine Drive, all across the city, the cheers could be heard!. The celebration has just begun. Where’s the party, Paltan!!
After a tough start with the bat, a serious fightback by the Delhi batters in their middle overs, our Girls in Blue and Gold refused to let the foot off the accelerator. We played like Mumbai, we played to win, and finally, at 11:30pm IST, THE TROPHY IS OURS, AGAIN!!
Oh, Nat!
The Delhi Capitals needed 29 off the last three overs. Marizanne Kapp was in the zone and had already pocketed a 17-run over. She had the momentum. Enter Nat Sciver-Brunt.
17.4: Kapp c Matthews b Nat Sciver-Brunt 40(26) – Perishes going for a glory hit down the ground
17.5: Shikha Pandey b Nat Sciver-Brunt 0(1) – A gun slower delivery goes through her shot
Not for nothing is she the best all-rounder in the world. The game had turned. We had our hand on the trophy.
It wasn’t just her brilliance at the end, but what she did in the beginning with the ball to set the tone that made sure the trophy came home, cleaning up the dangerous Meg Lanning in the second over. Oh, and don’t forget what she did with the bat. Okay, we’ll come to that.
Another day, another Hayley-Melie show
After Lanning fell, Shabnim Ismail, who’d done brilliantly stitching up dot ball after dot ball, got the explosive Shafali Verma cheaply. And then came the spin web, as it always does. Amelia Kerr took two (and the Purple Cap in the process), tightening the screws further. Hayley Matthews, meanwhile, had her laugh at the death, bowling the 19th over, and killing the game with the ninth wicket to fall, that of Minnu Mani.
Sup-Harman-Thor sets it up
While we might still be recovering from the tense chase, let’s not forget how we clawed back with the bat. The openers fell inside the fifth over with just 14 on the board. But Kaptaan Harmanpreet Kaur, and of course, the always-around Nat, just didn’t let the ship slow down. They counter-attacked, Nat with a guarded 28-ball 30, and Harman with a magical 44-ball 66, arguably one of her best ever knocks, making sure MI got to a fighting total of 149.
And then what! We defended it, tooth and nail. The Mumbai Spirit was well and truly on display. The packed stadium was our 12th player, making noise, backing the girls to the hilt, putting pressure on the DC batters, cheering on every dot ball, and carrying us home. HOME TO OUR SECOND TITLE!
