RO-HITMAN: Beast mode on, record fifth T20I century, sensational super over

By Mumbai Indians

Woah. This was something. Just when we thought his century was all we’d have to celebrate, we were given a bonus with a super-over, and then to top it up, came another super-over bonus. We can never have enough of Rohit Sharma and his crazy hitting, but on Wednesday (January 17) in Bengaluru, it was on peak display.

Out of the top drawer: Rohit Sharma – fifth T20I century, the singular leader of the pack, separating himself from the rest of the world catching up. It was an innings of absolute class, starting off with him needing to steady the ship as India found themselves at 22/4. And so he dug in, with the ball turning sharply, and brought out a tool we haven’t quite seen him using – the reverse sweep.

13 off 18 at the end of the sixth over, 17 off 24 at the end of the seventh, 27 off 33 at the end of the eleventh.

Sharafuddin Ashraf came on to bowl, and the shackles were broken. A pull over long-on, and a reverse-sweep six over point. For the first time his strike-rate went over 100, and in typical fashion, in a fashion we’ve seen a million times over the last 17 years, the beast was unleashed. Carnage followed.

Fifty in 41 balls. 80 in 56 balls. 89 off 61. 11 balls remained in the Indian innings. Azmatullah Omarzai ran in to bowl, and boom, 6, 4, 4, AND HISTORY!! Rohit Sharma became the first batter in the history of cricket to score five T20I centuries. He’s the Hitman for a reason.

Rohit Sharma and super overs, there’s some familiarity!

The MI Paltan knows what two super overs feel like. Remember the game against the Kings XI Punjab in the 2020 IPL? This was something quite like that, only with us being on the right side of the result this time around. Two sixes in the first, the smart quick thinking to retire himself out, a six and a four in the second. Oh, this was a treat!
