MI at the T20 World Cup (week 2): SKY stars, Tim blitzes, Thushara signs off

By Mumbai Indians

The real business starts now at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with as many as seven MI stars set to feature in the Super Eight stage of the tournament. There’s a rising star among those going back home as well. Read along..

Rohit Sharma

The India captain faced a tough challenge from his school buddy, Saurabh Netravalkar, in the game against USA on a tough New York wicket. On the field though, he was his usual self, marshalling his troops around, ringing in the bowling changes with serious accuracy, and keeping the hosts down to a rather low total.

Hardik Pandya

HP’s consistency with grabbing wickets continued with a fine spell of 2/14 against the USA, taking his overall count to seven from three games (joint with Arshdeep Singh). Hard work and patience, hyper-focused and passionate - these adjectives ably sum up Hardik’s run-in at the T20WC.

Jasprit Bumrah

Very rarely do you see JB not take a wicket in a game, but that was the case in the USAvIND matchup. But, knowing his character and legacy in the game, the Paltan knows that a BOOM BOOM special is loading in the Super Eight!

Suryakumar Yadav

Surya donned the Superman costume for India against USA, as his gritty unbeaten half-century got the Men in Blue over the line in a low-scoring thriller at Nassau County. Aapla Dada Surya painted the New York SKY-line with the Indian tricolour and safely carried them into the Super Eight with his experience, composure, and game-changing attributes.

Romario Shepherd

Big Rom and the West Indies finished the T20WC group stage with a 100% record, with significant wins over New Zealand and Afghanistan. Shepherd, for his part, contributed to the 13-run triumph over the Black Caps by registering 13 runs and 0/36. We are eager to see him shine when the Calypso Kings get ready to host the other teams (USA, England and South Africa) for the Super Eights in the scenic islands.

Tim David

Tim Bhau’s 14-ball 24 cameo put the stamp on a convincing final group stage outing against Scotland. This came on the back of his small-yet-spectacular performance against Namibia, where he helped Marcus Stoinis grab the wicket of tailender Ben Shikongo with an eye-catching caught dismissal.

Mohammad Nabi

The Afghanistan star, Mohammad Nabi, had two contrasting games in the last week. While he pitched in with 0/9 and an unbeaten 16 to push AFG to a seven-wicket triumph over Papua New Guinea, Nabi was on the losing side against co-hosts West Indies. As the Super Eight approaches, fans and Nabi alike will be eager to see him put on yet another super display with the bat and ball against India, Australia, and Bangladesh.

Nuwan Thushara

Sri Lanka may have failed to cut into the T20WC Super Eights, but Thushara was one of their standout players in the competition. Reminiscent of his form in the Blue and Gold of MI, the speedster finished his World Cup in style (3/24 against the Netherlands) and ended with eight wickets from three outings.
