From the highs of 2007, to the disappointments of the subsequent seasons, to the heartbreak of 2014 and 2016, to the unfinished business now in 2022. Ro-Hit-Man and his boys have arrived in Australia as the number one ranked side in the world, to hopefully emulate the batch of 2007.
Here, we take a trip down memory lane to recall India’s performances through the years at the marquee event.
T20 World Cup 2007: Maiden title-winning delight
India had a blockbuster start to the 2007 campaign, with the Group Stage game against Pakistan ending in a tie, to then be decided by a historic 3-0 victory for India in the Bowl-Out. After a defeat in the first Super 8 game against New Zealand, the Indian cricket team bounced back with thumping wins over England and South Africa.
The highlight: Yuvraj Singh registered six sixes in an over against Stuart Broad, the first batsman to achieve the feat in T20Is. The tournament favourites and reigning ODI World Champs,, Australia, were knocked out by a rampant Indian team in the semi-final to set up a mouth-watering World T20 final clash against Pakistan. Masterminded superbly by MS Dhoni, India lifted the title by beating their arch-rivals by five runs to win the inaugural T20 World Cup title!
India’s highest run-scorer: Gautam Gambhir (227 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: RP Singh (12 wickets)
T20 World Cup 2009: Pipped in England
In the 2009 T20 World Cup, India cruised through the Group Stage, beating Bangladesh and Ireland. However, a winless run in the Super 8s after defeats to West Indies, England and South Africa ended the team’s journey in England.
India’s highest run-scorer: Yuvraj Singh (153 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: Zaheer Khan and Pragyan Ojha (7 wickets)
T20 World Cup 2010: Tough ride in the Caribbean
Suresh Raina became the first Indian player to smash a T20I century in the 2010 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. Once again, India dominated in the initial stage of the tournament, winning against Afghanistan and South Africa but failed to win a single game in the Super 8s, losing to Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka to crash out of the tournament.
India’s highest run-scorer: Suresh Raina (219 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: Ashish Nehra (10 wickets)
T20 World Cup 2012: Hat-trick of Super 8 exits
Another World T20, another Super-8s exit after cruising through the Group Stage. However, this time the Indian cricket team won two of their three Super 8 matches. But a heavy defeat to the Australians in the opening game led to the downfall of India’s qualification hopes.
India’s highest run-scorer: Virat Kohli (185 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: Lakshmipathy Balaji (9 wickets)
T20 World Cup 2014: Sri Lankan anguish in the final
Finally, in 2014, in the edition hosted by Bangladesh, India made it into the knockouts. And they were dominant throughout the tournament, winning all five matches leading up to the finals, which included stellar wins against Australia and South Africa. However, Sri Lanka’s bowling proved to be the difference in the final and all India could manage was a total of 130 runs, which they easily chased down. Virat Kohli smashed the record for the most runs in a single edition of the T20 World Cup, a record which stands till date.
India’s highest run-scorer: Virat Kolhi (319 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: Ravichandran Ashwin (11 wickets)
T20 World Cup 2016: Heartbreak at Wankhede
India hosted their first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2016. After a setback against New Zealand in the opening game, India bounced back against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Virat Kohli played a riveting knock in the final Super 10 match against Australia (a virtual quarter-final), enabling India to make it to the semi-final. However, the West Indian batting onslaught at the Wankhede Stadium saw the Caribbean side chase down a mammoth total of 192 runs, leading to yet-another heartbreak for the Indians.
India’s highest run-scorer: Virat Kohli (273 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: Hardik Pandya and Ashish Nehra (5 wickets)
T20 World Cup 2021: Super 12s disappointment
In the most recent edition of the T20 World Cup, held in Oman and UAE, Pakistan and New Zealand beat India in the opening two Super 12 encounters. And it was very difficult for the Men in Blue to recover from there and make it to the next round, despite huge victories against Scotland, Afghanistan and Namibia.
India’s highest run-scorer: KL Rahul (194 runs)
India’s highest wicket-taker: Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah (7 wickets)
Overall, Mumbai Indians and Team India captain Rohit Sharma is the leading run-scorer for India in the T20 World Cup, accumulating 847 runs. With 26 wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin is India’s top wicket-taker in the T20 World Cups.
Both of them are a part of the team in the 2022 edition, and India open their campaign against Pakistan on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Can the 15-year-old history be repeated?
