“The way Hayley fought through shows her class and experience”: Amelia Kerr

By Mumbai Indians

An eight-wicket win with three overs to spare is as comprehensive as it gets. Mumbai Indians, who moved to the top of the table, courtesy their win over the UP Warriorz, had a complete team performance to thank. Amelia Kerr, who impressed with her bowling, providing the breakthrough against the run of play that began the turnaround in the game, was at the post-match press conference. Excerpts..

Thoughts on the match

It’s obviously a great win and it’s nice to be on the winning side. So many different players stepped up at different times in the game. Whether it was big or small contributions, it was outstanding. They got off to a pretty good start. Grace (Harris) got off to a flier. But with our bowling attack, we’ve got a lot of wicket takers, we can just keep pulling it back. The UP Warriorz bowled really well up top, but Nat (Sciver-Brunt) came and did what she’s been doing all season. That’s a world class innings. There were moments when we were put under pressure and weren’t the best team. But overall, some brilliant bits of cricket.

On the pitch and conditions on offer

I think the wicket we played on was pretty good. They did bowl well up top to Hayley (Matthews). When it’s tough, a lot of players can throw it away and it can then put your team under pressure. But she fought it through and was part of a really big partnership with Nat and finished off well ahead of a run-a-ball. That shows the class and experience she has as a cricketer. It would have been easy to give it away but she kept going.

Whether the team has the momentum now

There’s a little bit of momentum in a tournament, because each game you have to turn up and go through the processes to try and be the best you can be on that day, regardless of what’s happened in the past. Yes, people talk about momentum, but the great teams and the great players can turn up each and every day no matter what has happened in the past.

On looking at the net run-rate while trying to win the game

Today, it was just about winning the game. They bowled well at the start and put us under a little bit of pressure but it’s just about winning games and it’s just what are focusing on at the moment. It’s what every team is trying to do. We’re trying to get those points to make it to the final.

On looking to win on the road before heading to Mumbai

It’s not something we have talked about. Just taking each day as it comes. Every game is really important and you want to give yourself the best chance early on of making it to the final. It’s been a great start for the team with the wins we’ve had. At the death end, people might get tired and recovery is really important. But yeah, it’s about turning up each day to the best of your ability on and off the field.

On getting Grace Harris’ wicket

Grace is pretty powerful and an incredible ball striker. As a bowler, you have to accept that sometimes you’re going to be hit for boundaries. It’s nice to have been in a battle with someone that can hit the ball the way she does. You have to be really on as a bowler. I knew she was going to come hard and was just trying to bowl good pace and into the wicket to make it as hard as I could to hit it over the rope. Fortunately for me, she didn’t time the ball really well and I ended up getting her wicket. On another day, she can hit the same ball for six. It’s about bowling as many good balls as possible, especially when batters are coming hard. Your length and your pace as a spinner is really important.
