A fighting fifty from Tilak Varma and a four-wicket haul from Daniel Sams on his return to the side did not prove enough as MS Dhoni took CSK home in a thrilling last-ball finish to chase down 155.

Ravindra Jadeja won the toss for CSK and chose to bowl and youngster Mukesh Choudhary struck twice in the first over, removing both skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

He then dismissed Dewald Brevis to take three wickets in his opening spell. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav then shared a short 24-run stand with SKY being the aggressor with three fours and a six.

However, SKY fell attempting a slog sweep and in walked Hrithik Shokeen on his MI and Tata IPL debut. He stitched a patient 38-run stand with Tilak, hitting three well-taken boundaries in an innings of 25 before falling while trying to up the scoring rate.

Kieron Pollard and Daniel Sams fell soon but Tilak, who had assessed the pitch well in his time in the middle, picked up the pace with a few boundaries and compiled a well-made half-century.

A six and a four from Jaydev Unadkat then ensured that we finished on 155.

Daniel Sams then got us off to the perfect start, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad off the first ball and then struck again in his second over to take out Mitchell Santner.

Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu then shared a 50-run stand with Uthappa even surviving a dropped catch off debutant Hrithik Shokeen.

Unadkat then struck to send Uthappa back before Sams built up the pressure before dismissing Shivam Dube. In fact, Sams struck in every over he bowled as he also got rid of Rayudu in his final over to leave CSK at 103/5 in 15 overs, needing 53 runs.

Another debutant Riley Meredith, who had been economical in his three overs, then dismissed opposing skipper Jadeja with a well-disguised slower one.

Debutants Meredith (1/25) and Hrithik Shokeen, who had figures of 0/23 in four overs, shone on debut.

Terrific overs from Boom and Unadkat then left CSK with 17 runs to get off the final over.

Unadkat started off by trapping Dwaine Pretorius leg-before in the first ball before Dwayne Bravo took a single off the second.

MS Dhoni, who was batting on 12 off nine balls, then hit a six and a four and took two runs off the penultimate ball to bring the equation to four off the final ball.

Unadkat went with a low full toss but Dhoni got down and connected well enough to send it to the deep backward square boundary to win it for CSK.

Rohit was appreciative of the bowlers’ efforts in that close finish and gave credit to MSD for his calm approach.

“It was a great fight from us, our bowlers kept us in the game despite not batting well. In the end, you know how towering MSD is and he took them home,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

He felt that the slow start was not ideal in the context of this game.

“It’s hard to point the finger at one thing but we’re not starting well. If you lose quick wickets, you’ll always be playing catch up. I thought we did well to keep them under pressure till the last over but Pretorius and Dhoni took them home. We lost too many early wickets and did make a good comeback with bat and ball but it was not enough,” the captain concluded.

We will next take on LSG at the Wankhede stadium on April 24th.
