UPWvMI report: Back to winning ways, ft. Melie-Hayley combo

By Mumbai Indians

Quite the perfect way to get back on the winning trail. Equally quite the perfect way to put a disappointing game behind us. Again, quite the perfect way to sign off from Lucknow and march into Aamchi Mumbai!!!

A comeback of epic proportions!

When the UP Warriorz’s openers – Grace Harris and Georgia Voll – unleashed their attack in the powerplay, putting on a 74-run stand in under eight overs, it really looked 200 was on the cards. Nope, not when you have the quality of spinners Mumbai Indians do. Hayley Matthews drew first blood, Amelia Kerr took over and plucked a fifer in her four overs, and just like that, the Warriors slipped to lose nine wickets for the next 76 runs, ending up with an undercooked 150.

The Melie Kerr show

She started off her spell with Georgia smashing her for three fours in a row, and then conceding one more at the start of her next over. But then came the web, too sticky for the UP batters, using the conditions on offer in Lucknow to perfection.

Hailstorm Hayley!

If the Warriorz hoped for any twist in the second innings, Hayley was quick to put it to bed, going on a rampage with the bat, with eight fours and two sixes in her 46-ball knock of 68. She found good support in the ever-reliable Nat Sciver-Brunt, who chipped in with a 23-ball 37. In the end, with six wickets and nine balls to spare, we had two points in our kitty, jumping to second spot on the points table in the process.

Mumbai, we are coming home. And we cannot wait to see you in the stands at the Brabourne Stadium, egging us on as we look to seal a playoff spot and earn that Q against our name.
