The Indian cricket team completed an ODI series cleansweep over Zimbabwe with a 13-run victory at Harare on Monday, August 22nd.
While Shubman Gill was the standout batter in the first innings with his 97-ball 130, Sikandar Raza’s 95-ball 115 came close to handing Zimbabwe their first ODI win over India since 2013.
Brad Evans was the pick of the bowlers in the fixture, grabbing his maiden five-wicket haul (5/54).
India captain KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat first. He made two changes for the dead rubber, with Deepak Chahar and Avesh Khan replacing Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, also made two changes to their playing XI for the third ODI with Richard Ngarava and Tony Munyonga coming in for Tanaka Chivanga and Wessly Madhevere.
India got off to a relaxed start, with 41 runs in the powerplay overs.
KL Rahul would be the first Indian batter to be dismissed, as Brad Evans’ back-of-a-length delivery taking an inside edge and clicking the bails off the stumps.
Evans would add another scalp to his kitty, with his delivery taking a leading edge and going straight to Sean Williams at cover.
The introduction of Ishan Kishan saw India pick up the pace with runs on the scoreboard, as the left-hander and Shubman Gill stitched a match-defining 140-run stand for the third wicket.
Shortly after reaching his second ODI half-century, Kishan was run out in the 43rd over.
Sanju Samson, coming in to bat at number six after Deepak Hooda’s quick dismissal, cut a frustrated look after giving away his wicket at the end of the 46th over.
After slamming back-to-back sixes off Luke Jongwe, Samson flicked a length ball towards Takudzwanashe Kaitano at deep square leg.
Shubman Gill’s determined innings was brought to a close by Brad Evans in the final over, as the former miscued a loft shot and it found Innocent Kaia at long off.
Evans would complete his five-wicket haul with Shardul Thakur’s scalp.
Zimbabwe, given a target of 290, lost their first wicket in the third over. India’s strong call for a LBW review worked in their favour and Deepak Chahar would pocket the wicket of Innocent Kaia.
After smashing a six off the last ball of the sixth over, Takudzwanashe Kaitano retired hurt on 12 after feeling pain in his left leg.
Sean Williams and Tony Munyonga stitched a 46-run stand for the third wicket that saw Zimbabwe cross the 50-run mark in the 11th over.
Both the Zimbabwean batters would depart in the 17th and 18th over, thus putting some kind of pressure on the hosts who were showing signs of confident batting.
Enter Sikandar Raza, and the all-rounder almost got the hosts to their highest-ever ODI chase against India.
Raza’s 104-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Brad Evans got Zimbabwe needing 17 runs in 12 balls.
But, his determined knock of 115 off 95 balls came to a close in the 49th over and Zimbabwe would lose their last two wickets in the next five deliveries.
Surviving a scare, India secured a 13-run victory in the final ODI and completed a 3-0 whitewash result against Zimbabwe. It also means that India have gone 15 games unbeaten against the hosts in One Day Internationals.
