5th May 2023: The WPL weekly MI star tracker
So it’s been five weeks since we won the inaugural Women’s Premier League. What’s up with our champion players? Which corner of the world are they in? Who’s playing? Who’s chilling? Is there any competitive cricket going on? We’ve got you completely covered with everything that our players have been up to in our weekly blog. Read on ..
Hayley wreaks havoc at the FairBreak Invitational Tournament
Our Hayley Matthews, the WPL’s MVP – after scoring 271 runs and picking up 16 wickets in 10 outings – isn’t done yet. She’s carried her purple patch from India to Hong Kong. At the FairBreak Invitational 2023, a tournament that is featuring a number of the global superstars, she has single-handedly powered the Warriors to the title in the final, with a stunning 52-ball 123, and then doubling up with the ball with figures of 2/14 in her three overs!
She’s making single-handed look emphatic. As us, we’ve seen it first hand in March.
A maiden Cricket Australia (CA) contract for Heather Graham
Still famous for her hat-trick in the 5th T20I against India in December 2022, our 26-year-old all-rounder has been included in CA's list of contracted players for the first time, on the back of some impressive performances in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), domestic fixtures, and the national 'A' games. Given how packed the Australian side generally is, she’s done her time waiting in the wings. She’s now gotten the licence to fly, and we cannot wait for her to spread her wings.
Harman, Yastika, Pooja bag BCCI central contracts
It’s been a meteoric rise. After a super-impressive debut against a rampaging Australian side in Australia, she played a big role in halting their 26-ODIs winning run. And thus, quite aptly, she finds herself in the big league, with a central BCCI contract, joining two of our other stars, Kaptaan Kaur and “junior Hardik” Vastrakar.
Chloe Tryon and Issy Wong shine bright at the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy:
For the uninitiated, the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy is England’s premier 50-over competition. Chloe Tryon has joined the Northern Diamonds on an overseas deal, and in her debut game itself, she went berserk, smashing 63 off just 36 balls (6 fours and 4 sixes). She was also economical with the ball over the next couple of games, with figures of 0/34 (9) and 1/37 (10) against the Sparks and the Sunrisers respectively.
Speedster Issy Wong, playing for Central Sparks, is now officially an all-rounder. Why do we say? She’s opening the batting! She kicked things off with a stroke-filled 22, but it’s her bowling that continues to impress, bagging two wickets each against Diamonds and Southern Vipers.
