A SWOT look at India ahead of T20 World Cup 2024

By Mumbai Indians

As the T20 World Cup, hosted by the USA and the West Indies, approaches, the air is filled with anticipation and excitement. Fans are ready to unite and chant, "India, India!" This could be the year when India, hungry for their first win since their legendary victory in 2007, brings the trophy home.

Rohit Sharma is back to lead the team, with Hardik Pandya as his deputy. The batting lineup looks fierce with stars like Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube, Rishabh Pant, and Suryakumar Yadav. On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah, fresh from a fantastic IPL, will spearhead the attack. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Yuzvendra Chahal will spin their magic.

India kick off their tournament against Ireland in New York on June 5th. The biggest showdown of the tournament, India vs Pakistan, is on June 9th. With the USA and Canada in the same group, this promises to be an exciting tournament. Let's get ready for some thrilling cricket action!

Let's do a SWOT analysis of the Indian side:

Strengths: The Indian batting unit is excellent, boasting a lineup with stars like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rohit Sharma, the team captain, has been a formidable presence at the top of the order. His ability to anchor the innings and provide explosive starts is crucial. Suryakumar Yadav, the world's number-one T20I player, adds depth and versatility to the batting order. His innovative shots and ability to find gaps make him a key player.

Virat Kohli’s form is another significant strength. As the leading run-getter in the tournament (1141 runs in 27 matches), his ability to chase down targets and perform under pressure, a testament to his skill and experience, is unparalleled. Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young talent, has shown great promise and will look to replicate his heroics from the Test series against England, where he displayed his ability to handle pressure and perform consistently.

The bowling attack is also strong, led by Jasprit Bumrah, who has taken 74 T20I wickets at an economy of 6.55. His pace and accuracy make him a potent weapon, especially in the death overs.

Weaknesses: Speaking of worrying concerns, India hasn’t made it to the T20WC finals since 2014. This will be a challenge for the team in 2024 - one, for their fighting mentality and second, for the need to put the ghosts of the past to rest. Having reached the semi-finals in the 2016 and 2022 editions, the Men in Blue hope to go one step further this time.

Opportunities: India's squad is a perfect blend of seasoned experience and promising potential. Yashasvi Jaiswal has the chance to replicate his impressive performances from the Test series against England. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube, both playing in their first World Cup, are eager to seize this chance to establish themselves on the international stage. With such a blend of talent and experience, India stands a strong chance of bringing the trophy home once again.

Threats: India’s group-stage opponents, particularly Pakistan, pose a significant threat. Pakistan’s bowling attack is strong, featuring a variety of left-arm seamers and fast bowlers who can exploit any weaknesses in India’s batting lineup. Historically, matches between India and Pakistan are highly charged and unpredictable, adding extra pressure on the players.

In the Super 8 stage, India will likely face tough opponents like New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Australia. India’s record against New Zealand in T20 World Cups has not been favourable, with New Zealand often emerging victorious in crucial matches. Australia’s consistent performance in World Cups makes them formidable opponents as well. These teams have the capability to challenge India and test their weaknesses.

Paltan! It is time to get behind the Men in Blue as we embark on another shot at ICC silverware. The trophy drought has been long, but this team has always shown the grit, the hunger and the sacrifice needed to paint itself as a worthy challenger. Keep that support coming in as Rohit and Co. begin their latest World Cup adventure.
