By Mumbai Indians

After an action-packed BGT, the temperature is going to rise more with India's upcoming T20I series vs England 🔥! The excitement level is all set to go up a notch higher as some of the superstars of the shortest format of international cricket are ready to grace the tournament. A couple of English players who are all set to be a part of the Mumbai Indians squad for IPL 2025 are Will Jacks and Reece Topley.

As we inch closer to this blockbuster T20I series between India and England, starting on January 22, here’s a look back at the English players who had donned our glorious Blue & Gold over the years.

  1. Luke Wood

A fine left-arm fast bowler who came up the ranks in English cricket found his first IPL contract when Mumbai Indians signed him in 2024. He came in as a replacement for the Aussie left-arm bowler Jason Behrendorff and was signed for a base price of INR 50 lakh.

Making his IPL debut against Gujarat Titans in the season opener, the Englishman bowled only a couple of overs without picking up a wicket. His second appearance of the tournament came on a winning occasion against Delhi Capitals. He picked up the wicket of Shai Hope while bowling, and hit an important six with the bat in hand.

  1. Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan, renowned for his bowling expertise at the death, was brought in as a replacement for fellow Englishman Jofra Archer. Following a T20I World Cup-winning stint in 2022, Chris Jordan was roped in by Mumbai Indians to strengthen the bowling attack. Alongside his bowling prowess, Jordan’s athletic fielding and ability to produce short batting cameos made him a solid recruit.

The right-arm fast bowler featured in 6 matches for Mumbai Indians and picked up 3 wickets in IPL 2023.

  1. Jofra Archer

One of the generational talents of English cricket had already made his name in the IPL with scintillating performances for RR and was a player to watch out for in the IPL auction 2022. Mumbai Indians seized the opportunity as they made sure they got the services of the fierce fast bowler after a bidding war with two other teams in the auction room.

However, the fast bowler had to skip the entire 2022 season due to injury. He came back to the side in 2023, but his journey in the prestigious Blue & Gold jersey was cut short due to another injury. In his short stint with Mumbai Indians, he managed to pick up 2 wickets.

  1. Tymal Mills

Mumbai Indians secured the service of this T20I specialist in the 2022 auction. The left-arm fast bowler was primarily brought in to complement Jasprit Bumrah in the bowling attack while replacing the departing Trent Boult.

He started off remarkably as he picked up the wicket of Rishabh Pant at the Brabourne Stadium. His best performance that season came against Rajasthan Royals when he picked up 3 wickets giving away 35 runs.

  1. Jos Buttler

The most successful English cricketer who had donned the Mumbai Indians jersey in the IPL was Jos Buttler. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter made his IPL debut in 2016. While he scored 255 runs across 14 matches in his debut season, his remarkable contribution aided Mumbai Indians’ charge for the title in 2017. He scored 272 runs in 10 matches with a strike rate of 153.67. His most notable performance came in the match against Kings XI Punjab when he scored 77 off just 37 balls hitting 5 sixes and 7 boundaries. His whirlwind innings, along with notable contributions from others, enabled Mumbai Indians chase down a target of 199 in just 15.3 overs.

While the Englishman made a move to Rajasthan Royals in the next season, his contribution to the title-winning season in 2017 was one to remember.

  1. Alex Hales

An explosive opening batter enjoyed a very short span in the MI camp as he was brought in as a replacement for Corey Anderson in the 2015 title-winning season. Known for the Hale-storm, the English batter became a part of the squad at the business end of the tournament with the final league game and the playoffs remaining to be played. Although he never managed to get any game time in that season, he will surely remember it as he got a winners’ medal at the end of the season.

  1. Graham Napier

The first English cricketer to sign for Mumbai Indians was Graham Napier in 2009. He was with the squad for 2 years, and his only appearance for the team came in a winning cause against Kolkata Knight Riders when he picked up the crucial wicket of Morne van Wyk. Earlier in that match, the right-handed batter scored a crucial 15 helping the team post a challenging total.

English players to grace Blue & Gold in IPL 2025

Will Jacks has already earned his reputation as a batter who can light up the fireworks when required. He currently holds the record for the fifth fastest 100 by an IPL player (51 balls) which he set while playing for RCB against Gujarat Titans last season. All eyes will be on the English batting all-rounder when he takes the field for the 5-time champions come the month of March.

Another promising buy for Mumbai Indians during the auction was Reece Topley. The 6 ft 7-inch-tall left-arm fast bowler will have a crucial role to play when the action begins in the IPL. In his T20 career so far, Topley has picked up 228 wickets with an average of 22.85. However, The Englishman’s noteworthy performance came against India in an ODI match at Lord’s when he picked up 6 wickets at the cost of only 34 runs. The MI Paltan will have high hopes for the experienced pacer as Mumbai Indians bid to lift the trophy for the sixth time this season.
