Cricket, angst and everything in between took centre stage in the first Test between India and England, as the visitors handed India a defeat by 28 runs.

Each day had a different story, with India seemingly in the driver’s seat in the first half of the Test, while England bounced back on Day 3 and 4 - with the bat and ball.

Here is a quick recap of how the first IND vs ENG happened.

England bowled out on Day 1

The spin department of India - Ravichandran Ashwin (3/68), Ravindra Jadeja (3/88) and Axar Patel (2/33) were at the forefront of India’s early onslaught to dismiss England for 246 inside the third session of Day 1. Jasprit Bumrah also chipped in with a vital spell of 2/28 in 8.3 overs.

Rohit surpasses Ganguly

During his short stay (24 runs off 27 balls) at the crease in the first innings, Indian captain Rohit Sharma got himself an entry into a very exclusive club - the most international runs by an Indian cricketer. The Hitman needed 14 runs to surpass former India skipper Sourav Ganguly and move fourth on the list of India’s most prolific batters in international cricket.

India post 436 in the first innings

Whilst fighting off the spin-heavy bowling prowess of England, India latched on to the committed innings of Yashasvi Jaiswal (80), KL Rahul (86) and Ravindra Jadeja (87) to take a 190-run lead into the second half of what would turn out to be an emotionally-absorbing game of cricket.

Four-star Bumrah denies Ollie Pope double hundred

Day 3 of the IND vs ENG Test belonged to England vice-captain Ollie Pope, as he stitched a hundred-plus run partnership for the sixth wicket and would help England write off the 190-run deficit with his unbeaten 148. He would also remain unscathed from a special spell (2/29 in 12 overs) by Jasprit Bumrah, who managed to keep India in the mix of events.

On Day 4, after registering fifty-plus run stands for the seventh and eighth wickets and ensuring the visitors had a 200-plus lead, Ollie Pope was looking forward to scoring a match-defining double century. However, Bumrah stole that opportunity away courtesy of a trademark yorker that swept away the stumps. While Pope fell short of 200 by four runs, BOOM BOOM finished as India’s best bowler with figures of 4/41 inside 16.1 overs.

Hartley anchors England’s come-from-behind victory

India were reduced to 119/7 while chasing 231. But all hopes were not lost, thanks to the crucial 57-run partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin (28) and KS Bharat (28) for the eighth wicket. A late effort to write off a memorable victory ensued, with tailenders Mohammed Siraj (12) and Jasprit Bumrah (6) putting on a 25-run stand. But a confident Tom Hartley played a spoilsport.

After a disappointing spell (2/131) in the first innings, the England Test debutant spun a lethal web with his slow left-arm orthodox bowling and grabbed a record 7/62 to hand India their only fourth Test defeat since 2013 and the first loss after amassing a 100-plus lead in the first innings.

Brief scores: England 246 (Ben Stokes 70; Ravichandran Ashwin 3/68, Ravindra Jadeja 3/88) and 420 (Ollie Pope 196; Jasprit Bumrah 4/41) BEAT India 436 (Ravindra Jadeja 87, KL Rahul 86, Yashasvi Jaiswal 80; Joe Root 4/79) and 202 (Rohit Sharma 39; Tom Hartley 7/62) by 28 runs.
