MIvKKR: Another tough heartbreak! SKY-Tim's blitz falls just short

By Mumbai Indians

No, no. Another super close game, and another heartbreak. We've had a few of these this year, Paltan! Our return to our homeground didn’t go as planned, as we fell 24 runs short of staging a much-needed win against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday (May 3).

Winning the toss and bowling first, the MI Boys reduced KKR to 169, thanks to three-wicket hauls from Nuwan Thushara (3/42) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/18). And then Aapla Dada Surya (56) and Tim David (24) were the mainstays of our 170-run chase.

Here are the highlights of all the action that ensued today.

Three-shara on a roll!

A slow-and-steady run-up, a sling-like bowling action and a 100 per cent guarantee of cashing in wickets: This is not Lasith Malinga, but his student Nuwan Thushara. Let’s recap his wickets.

Overs 0.1 - Philip Salt

Overs 2.2 - Angkrish Raghuvanshi

Overs 2.6 - Shreyas Iyer

Now, that’s a Lankan special at the Wankhede!

Bullseye (Hardik Pandya version)

Captain HP's wicket-taking run saw him add another to his tally with a STRIKE! His nippy-length ball delivery snuck through Sunil Narine’s attempt to slog it, clipping the leg stump.

PC dethrones Bravo

It was a long time coming, but here we are! Piyush Chawla ascends to become the second-highest IPL wicket-taker of ALL TIME. PC’s wrong-un delivery tricked Rinku Singh into tossing the ball straight into his prized hands.

HP, Boom Boom put the finishing touches

Hardik Pandya (overs 16.2 and 17) and Jasprit Bumrah (overs 17.4, 17.6 and 19.5) put the final nails in the coffin of KKR’s batting in the first innings. While HP got rid of the dangerous duo of Manish Pandey (42, caught by substitute fielder Dewald Brevis) and Andre Russel (7, run-out), Boom Boom got his three wickets of the night in the death overs: Ramandeep Singh (2), Mitchell Starc (0), and Venkatesh Iyer (70) to get MI to chase 170.

A disappointing start

The KKR bowlers made a breakthrough early in the run chase by taking three wickets in the powerplay. Ishan Kishan, Naman Dhir and Rohit Sharma lost their wickets to three different bowlers - Mitchell Starc, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy.

SKY, Tim David’s spirited innings fall short

Suryakumar Yadav (56) poured his heart out and got MI back in the reckoning when a revival was needed. Tim David also stepped up with a 20-ball 24, but the duo couldn’t get the Blue and Gold past the finish line on our return home.

Okay, so Sunrisers Hyderabad are up next. We know it's been a tough campaign, and we know it's been hard to take. Let's leave the playoff talk aside and just play for pride.

It's our team, it's our pride.

Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 169 (Venkatesh Iyer 70, Manish Pandey 42; Jasprit Bumrah 3/18) BEAT Mumbai Indians (Suryakumar Yadav 56, Tim David 24; Mitchell Starc 4/33) by 24 runs.
