Lot of positives to take from DC match: Mahela Jayawardene

By Mumbai Indians

MI fell to a four-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in our Tata IPL 2022 opener as they chased down 178 with 10 balls to spare.

There were some good performances like Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 81, skipper Rohit Sharma’s 41 up top and top spells from Murugan Ashwin and Basil Thampi.

Head coach Mahela Jayawardene also noted some positive takeaways from the match.

“We did a lot of good things - batted well to put runs on the board. We were probably 10-15 runs short but I thought it was the first game so there must have been some nerves,” said Mahela.

While he was impressed with the bowlers’ showing, the mastermind felt there was one key thing lacking.

“Bowling-wise we executed but the consistency wasn’t there. We gave a lot of easy boundaries away, especially last-ball boundaries - it happened for 9 or 10 overs. So a lot of areas for us to improve and discuss going forward,” he stated.

“Overall it was a good outing but I’m sure the entire team is disappointed that we did not cross the line,” concluded Mahela.

MI take on RR next at the DY Patil stadium on April 2nd.
