By Mumbai Indians

Wankhede Stadium - आपलं घर! Today, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our home. A place that has given us fond memories, important lessons and loads of happiness.

Big moments in the World Cup, nail-biting IPL matches, enthralling Tests and run-fests in ODIs and T20s, Wankhede has seen it all.

Chalo Paltan, let’s revisit some iconic moments at our home!

1975 | Pahili match at the Wankhede Stadium

Built in 1974, our 🏠, in the heart of the Queen’s Necklace, hosted its first international match in January 1975 - a West Indies vs India Test.

1985 | Ravi Shastri’s cracking 6 in 6

In a Ranji Trophy encounter against Baroda in January 1985, the dazzling Mumbaikar Ravi Shastri smashed six consecutive sixes against Baroda. TodFod level = 🔝

1996 | Master Blaster illuminates first day-night match at Wankhede

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, our ICON, slammed an 84-ball 90 against Australia in the 1996 Cricket World Cup group match, which was the first-ever day-night match at the Wankhede Stadium. This shot against Warnie, beautiful 💙

2004 | Bhajji pa spins out Australia

Defending only 106 against Australia, Harbhajan Singh scalped five wickets while Murali Kartik chipped in with three as India bundled out Ricky Ponting and Co. for 93 to win a thrilling Test match. Spun it to win it, as they say!

2007 | Mumbai clinch star-studded Ranji Trophy final

Mumbai stacked up against Sourav Ganguly’s Bengal in the Ranji Trophy final. The Sachin Tendulkar’s first innings ton, Zaheer Khan’s five-for and Rohit Sharma’s second innings fifty helped Mumbai clinch the title by 132 runs.

2007 | VICTORY, from the jaws of defeat!

India were 64/6, chasing 194 against Australia. Tough task!

Up stepped Robin Uthappa, Zaheer Khan and Murali Kartik. With an unbeaten 52-run 10th-wicket partnership, Zak and Kartik sealed an emphatic chase for India. Goosebumps, even today!

2008 | That Jayasuriya Ton vs CSK

Throwback to… Sanath Jayasuriya - our first IPL centurion! The southpaw hit the CSK attack all around Wankhede, notching a zhakkas 114*(48) balls. Those 11 sixes, each one a core memory.

2011 | Dhoni’s World Cup winning six, Shastri’s commentary - Nostalgia galore!

The moment MS Dhoni hit Nuwan Kulasekara over long-on for six arguably goes down as the most iconic moment at the Wankhede Stadium. India lifted the World Cup after 28 years, the youngsters lifted Sachin Tendulkar on an emotional victory lap and the nation was brimming with tears of joy!

Need we say more? 😉

2013 | Master Blaster’s last hurrah, Hitman’s Test arrival

After 34,357 runs, 100 centuries and childhood memories pro max later Sachin Tendulkar retired from international cricket after his 200th Test at Wankhede, at home!

On the other hand, a new Test star emerged too. Rohit Sharma scored his second-consecutive ton and grabbed the Player of the Series award against West Indies.

2013 | Johnson, Ojha too hot to handle for CSK

With only 139 to defend against CSK, Mitchell Johnson derailed the visitors with three wickets in his second over. Pragyan Ojha, later, strangled the middle order as we bowled out CSK for 79 in 15.2 overs, their lowest total till date. Spine-chilling performance!

2014 | When Corey & Tare turned into humare dil ka sitaare!

We needed to chase 190 in 14.3 overs to qualify for the IPL 2014 playoffs. Despite early setbacks, Corey Anderson emerged with one of the all-time knocks - 95* (44).

Still, the equation came down to a boundary of the final ball to qualify. Facing his first, Aditya Tare smashed James Faulkner over deep square leg for a six to bring the roof down at the Wankhede.

2016 | Joe Root stuns the Proteas

The South Africa vs England T20 World Cup 2016 match was the then-highest aggregate score in a T20I. Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock slammed fifties to take the Proteas to 229 but Joe Root’s jalwa, scoring 83 (44), propelled a successful run chase for the Three Lions.

2019 | Polly’s one-handed blinder vs CSK

When it comes to getting the better of CSK, our Polly always stands out. This time, running backwards towards long-off, he flew to single-handedly grab a fast catch to dismiss Suresh Raina. The image below will refresh this up for you too! 😉

2021 | Ajaz’s fairytale Mumbai return

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel, once from Mumbai, enjoyed a successful return to his former hometown, picking 10/119 in the first innings. ICONIC!

P.S. India won the Test by 372 runs. 😜

2023 | “Victory code: 302 runs” vs Sri Lanka

India had yet another memorable Cricket World Cup match against Sri Lanka at Wankhede. Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82) had a dhamakedaar batting performance to take India to 357 before Mohammed Shami’s five-for dismantled the neighbours for 57 (not very neighbourly 😛).

To sum it up - A well-rounded victory!

2023 | Maxwell, 201* and the perfect rescue act

With 201 runs still left to chase, Australia were reduced to 91/7 by a rampaging Afghanistan. Pat Cummins joined a limping Glenn Maxwell at the crease.

What followed? MAYHEM. Maxwell slammed 21 fours and 10 sixes to pile on a 128-ball 201 as Australia stormed into the knockouts. Surely, one of the best ODI knocks ever!

2023 | A milestone semi-final success

Virat Kohli’s record 50th ODI ton, in front of Sachin Tendulkar himself, and Mohammed Shami’s spell-binding 7/57 enabled India to get the better of New Zealand by 70 runs and advance to the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. Paltan, masta feeling hoti na?

2024 | Mumbai crowned 42-time Ranji Trophy champions

Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy after a eight-year gap, beating Vidarbha by 169 runs in the final. It was a record-extending 42nd title for the Mum-boys!

2024 | T20 World Cup ke jeet ka jashn

Our most recent, fresh and lajawab memory of Wankhede is the victory parade after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. A proud skipper Rohit Sharma celebrated the success, along with the rest of the team, with Team India fans. NGL, we all shed a tear that night!
