WPL weekly star-tracker (Aug 5): A Hundred reasons to celebrate Queens Nat and Hayley

By Mumbai Indians

Yep, it’s the month of The Hundred, and all roads lead to the UK, where our girls have been just sensational. That’s no surprise. There’s no better way to put the Asia Cup defeat that the India Women suffered in the final behind us, than enjoy some cricket news. Let’s get reading..

Nat Sciver-Brunt (Trent Rockets): Two games in this week, two serious knocks, but sadly, on the wrong side of both results. Against Birmingham Pheonix, she fought, almost single-handedly in the chase of 140, with a 37-ball 59 studded with ten fours, but her side fell just three runs short. Against Welsh Fire, in what was a thriller of an encounter, she hit a 33-ball 37, and then chipped in with a couple of big wickets. Alas, it wasn’t enough to get the Rockets over the line.

******

Hayley Matthews (Welsh Fire): We’ve said it a zillion times, but let’s say it again. This is Hayley’s world, and we’re just living in it. She’s probably the biggest reason Welsh Fire are sitting comfortably at the top of the table. She started the week with perhaps the best knock of the season: an unbeaten 46-ball 78 in a clutch chase against London Spirit, and then followed it up with a quick 14-ball 20 to counter-punch after her side lost two quick wickets, to ensure another win.

Chloe Tryon (Southern Brave): In what ended up being a nail-biter of a tie against Northern Superchargers, Chloe played a key role, first in arresting a collapse with a steady 25, and then getting the scalp of the dangerous Phoebe Litchfield. In the next game against the Manchester Originals, she finished Southern Brave’s innings on a high with a six-ball 13, and then fought in the chase with another 13, but it wasn’t to be in a happy memory, with Brave losing both those games.
