WTC Final: Rohit set to lead India to title; Rahane returns

By Vineet Anantharaman

Let’s break away from the colour, the zing and the overall madness of the IPL. The BCCI, has just announced their squad for the World Test Championship final scheduled to be held from June 7-11 at The Oval Cricket Ground in London.

It’s almost like a fifth Test against Australia. The Hitman, our skip, our leader, Rohit Sharma, after successfully leading us to a hard-fought victory over the Aussies at home, is now all set to get us what we so very narrowly missed out on two years ago. There’s revenge waiting. It’s also the first time India and Australia are meeting in an ICC event final after the 2003 World Cup. Oh, there’s revenge waiting on those lines too.

The story of this 15-member Indian squad is that of Ajinkya Rahane, who after spending a year in wilderness, is back in place of the injured Shreyas Iyer. He’s been in some gun form in the IPL for CSK, churning out 209 runs in five innings at an average of 52.25 and a whopping strike-rate of 199.04.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat

In the opposite ranks is another of our stars, Cameron Green, who’s going through a purple patch of his own. He’s been super impressive in his short international career thus far, and will absolutely enjoy bowling in conditions where the ball nibbles around.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, David Warner

Trust us, if there’s something that gets us all excited in the middle of an IPL season, it is this. We can’t wait. Our boys in Blue (in their Whites of course) are all set to tame the Aussies in the English backyard.
