Yastika credits Charlotte’s “boost of confidence” for WPL success
She’s still riding high on the wave of success, is our Yastika Bhatia. At 22, in only her second year in international cricket, she’s been part of an ODI World Cup squad, a T20 World Cup squad, the Commonwealth Games, played Test cricket, and won a WPL title. That’s some CV.
With 214 runs across ten games for Mumbai Indians in the WPL, more importantly, forming a stellar opening partnership with the experienced Hayley Matthews, where the duo complemented each other perfectly, Yastika, is all praise for the coaching setup. A chat in particular with Head Coach Charlotte Edwards helped switch on the right buttons.
“She told me you would play all the games. It was a huge boost of confidence. You must have seen how that translated in the WPL,” she said ahead of India’s tour to Bangladesh.
"She gave me a lot of freedom. She said 'You just go out and play like a youngster would, without any pressure. There are a lot of good batters after you, so you need not just rotate strike. Just play your game and go for fours and sixes.'"
And boy, it was some show. Ahead of a super-busy international season with an upcoming World Cup early next year, it’s just the attitude Yastika would want to take with her – free and fearless.
